All applicants will be required to take The Law Enforcement Civil Service Exam (LECSE) implemented August 2017.

SUMMARY:
Protects county residents and property, enforces laws and serves legal documents, as appropriate.
Depending on the precinct, duties may include primarily law enforcement and patrol or execution of civil and criminal processes.
The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Depending on precinct to which assigned, may perform any or all of the following:
Serves warrants and makes arrests.
Patrols an assigned area, generally by vehicle, to prevent crimes and enforce laws and regulations.
Issues traffic citations, directs traffic and assists other law enforcement agencies in working accidents.
Investigates traffic accidents and crimes against persons and property and assists federal, state and local law enforcement officials.
Keeps records of activities and makes reports concerning crimes, complaints, accidents and investigations.
Questions witnesses and suspects and takes statements and depositions.
Gathers and labels evidence, takes photographs and fingerprints, guard and transports prisoners and testifies in court.
Transports and books prisoners.
Serves as substitute dispatcher or bailiff as required.
Trains new deputies and reserves in performance of various job duties.
Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints and takes action as necessary.
May assist emergency vehicles on escorts and on traffic control.
May be called upon to testify in a court of law.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County’s insurance carrier.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Dependent upon precinct, experience as a dispatcher or peace officer may be required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before members of the public or employees of organization. Employee reads laws, criminal books and reports and prepares written reports.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages. Employee utilizes mathematical skills to maintain records and reports.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Licensed as a Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.
May be required to be certified as a Jailer or Radar Operator. Must have a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, departmental policy, rules, regulations and laws.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other law enforcement officials and agencies and the general public.
Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action.
Ability to learn the use and care of vehicles, firearms and specialized equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, preferably in both English and Spanish.
Good physical condition.
May be required to type accurately at a speed of at least 40 words per minute.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works with explosives when searching buildings during bomb threats or discharging a firearm. Employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals when performing the duties of a peace officer while at a hazardous spill scene or fire. Employee may be exposed to infectious diseases while restraining or transporting prisoners. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
COMMENTS:
On many occasions, employee is required to physically restrain hostile, combative individuals and move them to other areas. This requires extensive physical exertion.
