SUMMARY: Serves as a crew leader for a two-to-four-person survey crew. Participates directly in surveys and performs related calculations. Prepares accurate field notes and inspects road and drainage construction in progress.

The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Supervises a county survey party making surveys for the planning, design and construction of roads, drainage facilities and other county facilities.

Plans and schedules survey work.

Establishes appropriate survey controls and directs the operation of the field survey crew.

Performs accurate surveying work to check construction tolerances and locations.

Checks court records for information about field survey locations.

Records field notes in a neat, precise manner and/or ensures that others record these notes.

Responsible for the accuracy and precision of all survey work performed under his/her supervision.

Guides and instructs other members of the crew in the operation of equipment and is responsible for the maintenance of all survey crew equipment while in the field.

Plans, directs and supervises job layout and inspection, field staking, calculation of surveying results, reduction of field notes, drafting of field information into suitable working drawings and preparation of right-of-way notes.

Performs inspections and maintains records on inspections.

Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises survey party crew members. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Nueces County policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County’s insurance carrier.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus four years of work experience performing surveying (directly related college or trade school training may be substituted for up to two years of work experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with a variety of mathematical concepts and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license or available alternate means of transportation.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic knowledge of civil engineering.

Skill in land surveying techniques and applications.
Ability to operate surveying equipment.

Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including walking and lifting heavy objects.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other departments and agencies, contractors and the general public.

Good physical condition.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing about both technical and nontechnical matters.

Supervisory skills.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to dust and chemicals that are placed on the fields. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
