About The Population Division – 2030 Census Preparation
An accurate census is crucial for New York City because it impacts the quality of data used for vital decision-making, funding allocation, and political representation at various levels of government. The federal government’s Census efforts are based on having the correct addresses, and when they are missing or have inaccurate address information, there is the risk of a serious undercount of the population. There are no do-overs with the decennial census. We will have to live with the results for an entire decade.
In preparation for the 2030 U.S. Census, the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) program will provide New York City and other local governments with an opportunity to review and comment on the list of addresses that is used as a basis for mailing census forms. For the 2030 LUCA program, DCP needs to analyze various data sources and conduct field research, allowing us to find and add missing housing units to the Census Bureau’s address list. DCP's previous LUCA efforts have added hundreds of thousands of addresses to the Census Bureau’s list in each of the past three censuses, preventing the city from being undercounted and making sure that we received a fair share of billions of dollars of funding along with proportionate political representation. Participating in LUCA is an opportunity to understand census data from the ground up, walk the city’s neighborhoods, and make a difference by ensuring everyone is counted!
