DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14
wastewater treatment plants, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories and harbor vessels.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment is seeking to fill the position of Section Chief of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Emergency Response and Support, who will be a critical support leader for achieving the Bureau’s number one stated goal: “Ensure a culture of safety where safe work practices are fully embraced and integrated into all our work.”
Job Purpose
Under jurisdiction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, with wide latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, serves as EHS Section Chief for EHS Emergency Response and Support in the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment.
Job Tasks/Duties
The EHS Emergency Response and Support will manage and direct environmental, health and safety (EHS) staff in evaluating facility performance and identifying key performance indicators to consistently analyze EHS trends, successes, as well as emerging risks across BWT.

Job Tasks/Duties
The EHS Emergency Response and Support will manage and direct environmental, health and safety (EHS) staff in evaluating facility performance and identifying key performance indicators to consistently analyze EHS trends, successes, as well as emerging risks across BWT.
Responsible For
- Responding on a 24/7 basis to EHS emergencies at BWT facilities.
- Working collaboratively with Operations to resolve EHS issues.
- Support emergency evacuation drills and scenarios to ensure employee safety and compliance.
- Attending labor management meetings and work closely with employee representatives to resolve safety concerns.
- Conduct Incidents and Near Miss investigations to better understand root causes and effective preventive and corrective actions.
- Assist with identifying leading and lagging indicators and identify solutions to mitigate conditions.
- Assist with computer-based systems for ensuring entry, tracking and closeouts and overall quality assurance (i.e. AIIMS).
- Five years of full-time satisfactory experience in responsible charge of the operation of plants or facilities utilizing high tension electrical equipment (600 volts or more), including troubleshooting and repairing such equipment, in one or more of the following: electrical generating stations, electrical switching stations, water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, water pumping stations, wastewater pumping stations, other collections facilities or high volume ventilation systems; or
- Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above, and a baccalaureate degree in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering or in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or
- Four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above and an associate degree in science or applied science from an accredited college or university with a major in water quality monitoring, wastewater treatment plant operations, environmental health, environmental control, or in electrical mechanical, or in civil technology, or in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering technology; or
- Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above plus three years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician; or
- Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, including three years of full-time satisfactory experience troubleshooting and repairing high tension electrical equipment (600 volts or more) as that described in “1" above; or
- A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1", “2", “3", “4", or “5" above. Education may be substituted for experience on the basis that one year of experience will be credited for each 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree in one of the disciplines described in “2" or “3" above. However, all candidates must have at least two years of satisfactory experience as described in “1" above, except for candidates who qualify under “5” above.
