The New York City Comptroller’s Office works to promote the financial health, integrity, and effectiveness of New York City government, in order to strengthen trust, secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers, and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city. Led by an independently elected citywide official, the comptroller’s office provides checks and balances needed to hold City government accountable for budgeting wisely, investing responsibly, operating efficiently, acting fairly, living up to its obligations and promises, and paying attention to the long-term challenges we face together.

The Bureau of Public Affairs is the principal liaison between the New York City Comptroller’s office and the public, elected officials, and community-based organizations. The Bureau provides engagement, organizing, and event planning capacity to support the Comptroller’s strategic objectives and provide direct assistance to New Yorkers navigating City bureaucracy. Public Affairs is responsible for making the Comptroller’s Office more accessible to everyday New Yorkers, as well as collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to leverage the tools of the office in ways that improve the lives of New Yorkers across the five boroughs.

This position will serve as the Comptroller's Office lead on government relations & legislative affairs and will be reporting to the Deputy Comptroller for Public Affairs.

Duties and responsibilities for the position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Research, analyze, and track any legislation, laws, hearings and/or policies that relate to the Comptroller’s priorities and/or impact the Comptroller’s Office operations.
  • Develop and implement the Comptroller’s Office annual City & State legislative agenda in collaboration with various internal stakeholders.
  • Build & maintain relationships with elected officials and relevant staff on the Comptroller’s behalf.
  • Coordinate with elected officials & appropriate staff within various legislative bodies and City/State agencies to advance the Comptroller’s strategic objectives.
  • Assist in the logistical coordination & preparation for legislative hearings and other public events.
  • Prepare briefings and present salient.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and (4) or more years of relevant experience, preferably performing functions similar to those listed in the bulleted list of job description above; or,
  • A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience mentioned above.

Preferred Skills

  • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience preferably in NYC or NYS government and/or politics. - Strong written & verbal communication skills. - Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment with shifting priorities. - Ability to work collaboratively and independently. - Strong statutory, research and analysis skills. - Excellent attention to detail and highly organized individual. - Some familiarity with policy and budget issues that pertain to the work of the NYC Comptroller’s office is preferred. - Excellent judgment. - Hardworking, team player committed to advancing justice, opportunity, and sustainable neighborhoods in NYC.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.

Salary : $100,000 - $110,000
