The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Correctional Intelligence Bureau (CIB) is seeking an Investigator who will be responsible for conducting thorough investigations into departmental violations and criminal activity. The ideal candidate will have strong background in criminal investigations, exceptional attention to detail and the ability to adapt to a dynamic and challenging environment.

  • Investigate a variety of complaints and criminal activities, including but not

limited to narcotics and gang-related crimes.

  • Conduct criminal and department investigation, including reviewing and analyzing

documents, conducting field tests of drugs and gathering evidence.

  • Accurately report findings and provide pre-trial support, including testimony

in administrative and criminal proceedings.

  • Evaluate the reliability of incoming intelligence, assess its impact on existing

threats, and identify emerging trends and indicators of changes to the threat landscape.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to share intelligence and

coordinate efforts to mitigate risks.

  • Provide support to other operational areas within the unit, as required including but

not limited to evidence collection and other investigatory teams within the Correction

Intelligence Bureau.

  • Maintain detailed records and case files to support investigations and legal proceedings.
  • Adapt to shifting work priorities and directions in a constantly changing environment.

INVESTIGATOR (DISCIPLINE) (DOC - 31164

Minimum Qualifications

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in one or more of the fields of accounting, auditing, correction administration, criminal justice administration and planning, forensic science, inspection, investigation, law enforcement, personnel administration, police science, and security, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working in a correctional or law enforcement setting. PEACE OFFICER STATUS REQUIRED. - Certification in gang investigation, intelligence analysis, or related fields. - Knowledge of contraband, narcotics, and gang-related trends and tactics. - Bilingual proficiency (Spanish) is a plus. - Ability and willingness to learn how to identify and investigate security risk groups (gangs) and criminal activities. - Strong background in criminal investigations, with a focus on narcotics, gang-related crimes, and other criminal activities. - Ability to evaluate intelligence reliability, assess threats, and identify emerging trends. - Excellent attention to detail and commitment to justice and integrity. - Strong analytical, communication, and report-writing skills. - Ability to testify and defend findings in administrative and criminal proceedings. - Ability to work in a dynamic environment and adapt to shifting priorities. - Must pass a thorough background check and meet all departmental requirements.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
