AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/5/2025
The Department of City Planning (DCP) is excited to provide a summer experience that provides local undergraduates with the skills and tools to engage in public outreach to achieve neighborhood and city-wide planning goals.

The program is open to students interested in public service, who are seeking insights into the skills and tools needed to support community advocacy and curious about entering career fields related to city planning, such as information technology, environmental sciences, law, public policy and many more.

In addition to on-the-job training, the program will offer an Agency orientation, a Public Engagement Boot Camp and opportunities to put these skills into action to support the Agency’s summer outreach initiatives. Additionally, the Agency will host Intern Networking activities and site visits to see how the NYC Department of City Planning is working with communities in all five boroughs.

There are several job postings with descriptions of each Division’s summer outreach efforts. Interns should apply to all Divisions they are interested in working. About DCP

The Department of City Planning (DCP), through extensive community engagement, plans for the strategic growth and development of the City, develops citywide and neighborhood land use policies and zoning regulations, and shares its perspectives on growth and community needs with NYC city agencies in collaboration with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

DCP has an expansive work program focused on supporting inclusive planning initiatives to engage communities to promote sustainability, housing access and economic opportunity through informed decision-making. DCP is a small agency of approximately 300 professionals, with offices in all five boroughs, serving the future goals of a city of nearly 9 million people.

About The Staten Island Office

Staten Island is home to nearly ½ million people, and is characterized by its unique geography, including the Serpentine Ridge that traverses much of the island, and natural features such as coastal wetlands and large wooded areas. While the smallest of the five New York City boroughs, the planning issues facing the borough are very similar to those facing other mid-sized cities throughout the rest of the country, including growth management, infrastructure, transportation, and affordable housing. While much of the island consists of lower-density “suburban” communities, there is significant growth underway in the more urban North Shore and throughout the island’s many traditional town centers. The zoning for the borough is comprised of several distinct special districts, including three that, together, cover the majority of the island and place a large focus on the preservation of natural features. Working closely with central divisions of the Department of City Planning, the Staten Island Office is responsible for the full range of borough planning activities, including: developing borough-wide and local plans with a focus on growth management, affordable housing, resiliency, natural resource preservation, and transit-oriented development; reviewing and processing land use applications; leading community outreach; planning for resiliency and climate change; and providing technical and policy guidance and direction on all land use and zoning related matters to the City Planning Commission, local Community Boards, elected officials, and the public at large.

The Staten Island Office (SIO) is seeking an intern to assist with community engagement. Engagement opportunities would include discussions and training sessions with local youth organizations, schools, and potentially local civic organizations. SIO wants to empower youth and local communities in the decision-making process by sharing the fundamentals of land use and zoning. Soliciting needs and understanding community concerns will also help foster a more constructive dialogue with local stakeholders who may be confused or intimidated by complex proposals or the land use review process.
