In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Traffic Control Inspector, or must have taken, passed, and be reachable on the Open Competitive Traffic Control Inspector Exam # 3062 or be eligible under the 55a program.

The Division of Traffic Operations is seeking to hire a Traffic Control Inspector Level 1 in the Signals Timing and Intersection Control Unit. The successful candidate will conduct surveys and studies for traffic signals, All-way stops, Left Turns, and Leading Pedestrian Intervals within the five boroughs. Conduct studies of traffic conditions to develop ways of reducing congestion, and accidents, and to improve the operations of street and transportation facilities. Conduct traffic studies regarding conditions, problems, changes, and improvements relating to traffic controls, signals, safety, access, circulation, the density of vehicular and pedestrian volume, accidents, and speed. The successful candidate will make recommendations on the need for traffic signs, traffic signals (including modifications), Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS), street lights, pavement markings, and other traffic control devices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization, and two years of full time satisfactory experience in vehicular traffic regulation and control or in conducting traffic studies; or
  • An Associate of Applied Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering technology, urban studies, urban planning, mathematics or another

closely related field; or

  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and a satisfactory combination of experience and/or college education that is equivalent to that described in "1" or "2" above. College credits obtained from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credits for one year of full time experience. However, for every 30 semester credits that are substituted for one year of full time experience, at least 6 of the 30 semester credits must be in engineering technology, urban studies, urban planning, mathematics or other closely related field.

License Requirements

Must possess a motor vehicle driver license, valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Requirements for Assignment Level II

To be considered for assignment to Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above: one additional year of fulltime satisfactory experience working in Assignment Level I; or one additional year of

full time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above for a total of three years of experience. Such experience must include supervising the regulation of vehicular traffic or the conduct of traffic studies.

Requirements for Assignment Level III

To be considered for assignment to Assignment Level III candidates must have, in addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above: two additional years of

full time satisfactory experience working in Assignment Levels I and II for a total of four years of experience; or two additional years of full time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above, at least one of which must have been in supervising vehicular traffic regulation and control or in conducting traffic studies.

Preferred Skills

  • Candidate should be able to prepare the intersection sign order, block order, and school order and be able to prepare and write repair orders. - Familiarity with the SIMS database is a plus. - Familiar with using electronic devices for data collection (Jamar machine, speed gun, etc.). - Ability to utilize computer skills to access and process collected data. - Candidate should be able to read blueprints and proficient in preparing field sketches. - Familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
