About the Job
As a New York State Court Officer-Trainee, you will be a peace officer ensuring the safety and security of our courts, judges, juries, and the public. After completing formal training at the Court Officers Academy, you will embark on a paid, two-year traineeship filled with hands-on learning and be automatically promoted after two years to the New York State Court Officer title.
Your Role:
- Maintain courtroom security and assist judges, juries, and witnesses.
- Screen visitors and prevent contraband from entering courthouses.
- Patrol court buildings, escort defendants, and administer first aid in emergencies.
- Make arrests, restrain unruly individuals, and ensure order in the courtroom.
- Operate security equipment and assist juries with sequestered accommodations.
- Perform various administrative tasks, from managing court records to preparing reports.
- Provide and assist court visitors with information and general guidance.
Who Can Apply?
- No experience needed! Must meet these requirements to be appointed to the Academy:
- At least 20.5 years old by the time of appointment.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- New York State resident with a valid driver’s license.
- U.S. citizen, legally eligible to purchase and carry firearms.
You must pass a multiple-choice exam, as well as physical, medical, background, and psychological evaluations to join the team.
