Under the direction and supervision of the Professional Land Surveyor 1 the incumbent will be required to perform complex survey computations and calculations, in depth interpretation of historic land records and legal documents, and preparation and interpretation of survey maps. Duties may include but are not limited to field work to take survey measurements using total station and GNSS equipment, use of coordinate geometry and CAD software, as well as basic computer literacy. Incumbent will also assist in maintenance of the Region's Real Property inventory, the discovery and resolution of encroachments on State property, and surveying required for the defense of litigation against the State.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
Minimum Qualifications For Appointment To Land Surveyor Trainee, NS
Either 1. Graduation from an Engineering Accreditation Commission, Engineering Technology Accreditation, or Commission Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited bachelor’s or higher degree program in surveying or surveying technology;
or 2. Eligibility to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying examination through the National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying via letter issued by the New York State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying (proof of eligibility required).
Minimum Qualifications For Appointment To Assistant Land Surveyor, SG-20
Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) or successful completion of 52 weeks of service as a Land Surveyor Trainee and successful completion of the FS examination.
Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or
Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
or
Transfer Eligible - Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: one year of permanent competitive service as a Land Surveyor Technician 2.
55-b/55-c Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications above and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.
Individuals appointed as a Land Surveyor Trainee are required to complete a minimum of one year of successful performance as a Land Surveyor Trainee and pass the Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS). If you pass the FS by the end of the first year, you may be advanced to the Grade 20 Assistant Land Surveyor title. If you do not pass the FS by the end of the second year of the traineeship, you will be terminated from your position.

Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

- If appointment is at the Assistant Land Surveyor, SG-20 level, the starting salary for this position is $91,639. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $74,139 plus a geographic pay differential of $13,500 specific to this title and location and downstate adjustment/location pay of $4,000.
