A Facilities Operation Assistant 2 may perform a variety of tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery, the surrounding grounds, and the vehicles and equipment used in maintaining this facility.
Duties May Include
Minimum Qualifications
One year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 or Motor Vehicle Operator; OR, two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.
Additional Comments
This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/25/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be available for emergency response.
Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

Duties Description
A Facilities Operation Assistant 2 may perform a variety of tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery, the surrounding grounds, and the vehicles and equipment used in maintaining this facility.
Duties May Include
- Clean buildings and facilities including restrooms, and restock supplies.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and surrounding grounds using the appropriate tools and equipment.
- Perform other maintenance tasks such as collecting and disposing of trash, mowing lawns, and snow removal by shovel or powered snow removal equipment.
- Move furniture and equipment in the performance of custodial functions.
- Replace light bulbs; wash and dust fixtures, furnishings, floors, corridors, stairs, stairwells, and partitions using appropriate supplies and equipment; including ladders and scaffolding.
- Pick up and remove hazardous articles from floors and equipment and place them in designated receptacles or appropriate locations.
- Operates self-propelled and motorized equipment, such as tractors, pumps, compressors, vehicles, small trucks, light construction equipment, electric pallet jacks, forklifts, and snow removal equipment.
- Supervises Facility Operations Assistants 1, or other grounds, custodial, or maintenance crew, providing work assignments based on priorities set by management, ensuring schedules, standards and guidelines are met.
- Operates shop machinery to make and assemble tree and shrub seedling storage containers and boxes; erecting and moving partitions; and under supervision, assists in erecting and renovating buildings and structures.
- Responds to equipment problems by solving minor ones and directing major ones to a supervisor.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment by following preventive maintenance schedules to insure safe and trouble-free performance under the direction of journey-level trades position.
- Mixes and applies fertilizers to tree and shrub nursery stock.
- Performs interior and exterior painting not requiring fine finish or decorative treatment; stains and finishes wood and furniture, painting equipment, installs wallpaper, and spray paints surfaces and equipment.
