Duties Description
Duties include but are not limited to: Supervise and provide professional guidance and technical support to the Regional Survey and/or Right of Way (ROW) Mapping units; plan tasks, allocate staff to manage multiple projects, monitor progress and evaluate quality of work performed by both in-house staff and outside consultants; Making complex highway boundary and property line determinations and assisting staff with research of title data and other historical record information; Prepare responses to Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests, Use and Occupancy Permit requests, Surplus Property requests; Advise and assist regional staff on issues related to survey and mapping; Assist the Senior Land Surveyor in all his/her duties, including signing/sealing appropriation maps as necessary.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Land Surveyor Trainee
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
Either 1. Graduation from an Engineering Accreditation Commission, Engineering Technology Accreditation, or Commission Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited bachelor’s or higher degree program in surveying or surveying technology;
Or 2. Eligibility to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying examination through the National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying via letter issued by the New York State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying (proof of eligibility required).
As a Land Surveyor Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Land Surveyor, Grade 20. To advance to Assistant Land Surveyor, you must have obtained proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) and successfully completed the requirements of the traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority. At the discretion of the appointing authority, early advancement to the Assistant Land Surveyor is possible if you have obtained your FS and have successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship. It is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority’s personnel office upon obtaining proof of passing the FS. You may receive an increase in salary upon obtaining your FS. Information about this increase will be provided by the appointing authority.
Assistant Land Surveyor, SG-20
Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Fundamentals of Surveying Examination or successful completion of 52 weeks of service as a Land Surveyor Trainee and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying examination.
Candidates may also be qualified for permanent appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law

The starting salary for a Land Surveyor Trainee position is $65,001. The starting salary for an Assistant Land Surveyor is $79,032. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $72,032 with an additional geographic pay differential of $7,000, specific to this title and location. The maximum compensation for this position is $98,381. This amount is comprised of the standard job rate of $91,381 with an additional geographic pay differential of $7,000, specific to this title and location. In addition, a Mid-Hudson Adjustment of $1,650 or a Downstate Adjustment of $3,400 may also apply depending on the location of the position.
