NYSERDA
New York, NY Intern
POSTED ON 4/3/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/2/2025
New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. The Climate Act has created the most aggressive climate change goals in the nation and requires an ambitious agenda that blends proven catalysts with innovative approaches while operating across a broader energy arena that is rapidly evolving. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) is a driving force in realizing this agenda. NYSERDA works with stakeholders that span residents, business owners, developers, community leaders, local government officials, universities, utilities, investors, entrepreneurs, and more, to develop, invest, and foster conditions that:

  • Attract the private sector capital investment needed to expand New York’s clean energy economy.
  • Overcome barriers to using clean energy at a large-scale in New York.
  • Enable New York’s communities and residents to benefit equitably from energy efficiency and renewable energy.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

At the Future Energy Economy Summit in September 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul called for advanced clean energy technologies to play a key role in supporting renewable energy and economic development. The Summit outlined next steps needed to plan for growing energy demand that can support the State’s commitment to accelerate progress toward a zero-emission electricity system. During Governor Hochul's 2025 State of the State includes the creation of a Master Plan for Responsible Advanced Nuclear Development in New York (Master Plan). To guide next steps in the Master Plan process, NYSERDA published a Blueprint for Consideration of Advanced Nuclear Energy Technologies. One often-cited challenge for nuclear plant builders is a weak U.S. nuclear supply chain following a several-decade pause in building new plants. In order to understand the current state of the nuclear supply chain in New York State, NYSERDA’s Economic Development & Strategic Partnerships is looking for an inter to help with the following responsibilities to help the department better understand the current state of the nuclear supply chain in New York.

One of the primary responsibilities of the intern (60% of time) will include designing and conducting a comprehensive survey targeting nuclear supply chain companies in New York State and to gather data on their supply chain needs, workforce requirements, and educational qualifications for workers. The intern will analyze the collected data to identify key trends, challenges, and gaps in the current supply chain and workforce infrastructure. Additionally, the intern will research and evaluate existing educational offerings in New York State, assessing their alignment with the industry’s demands. The intern will prepare a detailed report summarizing findings, offering actionable recommendations for addressing identified gaps, and presenting the results to key stakeholders, including state agencies, industry leaders, and educational institutions.

As part of the intern’s responsibility will be to conduct market research (25% of time) entailing a deep dive into target industries & supply chain companies from the solar, battery, wind and electric vehicles to see if there are transferable parts and technologies that can help enhance the current nuclear supply chain and/or offer new markets for companies that the company may not have considered.

Lastly, the intern will help the Economic Development Team staff in curating the information into a Customer Relations Management database (Salesforce) to develop potential a strategy for lead generation and outreach to the selected companies.

This is a paid internship for current students at an accredited college. The pay rate is from $18 to $20 per hour based on current class year. This internship will begin Summer 2025 and continue to Spring 2026 and beyond.

It is expected that interns will follow our telework policy, with a combination of in-office and remote work. Interns work up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week between semesters, when not attending classes. The Economic Development and Strategic Partnership team is based in the Albany office. The intern will have a choice of working from the NYC or Albany office during the duration of the project.
