Position Title: Mechanical Laborer (Helper)
Reports to: Chief Mechanical Officer
Location: Binghamton, NY
Position Objective
The Mechanical Laborer (Helper) plays a critical role in supporting the maintenance and repair of diesel locomotives. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals with a strong willingness and ability to learn a mechanical craft. While prior mechanical experience is preferred, it is not required. The role involves working around heavy machinery in varied weather conditions and requires adherence to strict safety protocols.
Major Responsibilities
Locomotive Maintenance & Repairs:
- Assist in inspecting, servicing, and repairing diesel locomotives.
- Perform routine tasks such as fueling, sanding, lubricating, and cleaning locomotive components.
- Work with hand and power tools to complete maintenance tasks.
- Assist experienced mechanics with preventive and corrective repairs.
Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols and FRA regulations when working around locomotives and heavy equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Other Duties:
- Work in outdoor and indoor environments under varying weather conditions.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to complete tasks.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by mechanical supervisors.
Expectations
- Work in outdoor and industrial environments in all weather conditions.
- Ability to walk on uneven surfaces, stand for extended periods, and perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Display strong attention to detail and maintain a high standard of safety at all times.
- Willingness to learn mechanical skills through hands-on training.
Required Qualifications/Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and strong willingness to learn.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, drug/alcohol testing, and background check, with ongoing compliance testing once hired.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- Previous experience in mechanical, automotive, or industrial maintenance.
- Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Basic understanding of locomotive or heavy equipment maintenance.
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly Wage: $23.93 per hour subject to collective bargaining agreement
