What are the responsibilities and job description for the Direct Support Professional position at NYUMBANI?
Direct care staff, also known as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), assist clients with their day-to-day activities. This position will report directly and receive supervision from the Shift Lead Staff or Administrator.
1.1.1 Minimum Qualification
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid California state driver’s license. NOT A REQUIREMENT
- Have a minimum of 6 months of experience in providing direct care to people with developmental disabilities in a residential care facility.
- Must be in good health, which will be verified by a health screening, including a test for tuberculosis.
- Must pass a criminal record clearance through the Live scan process.
- Must have valid First Aid and CPR certification.
- Must complete DSP (Direct Support Professional) 1 (One year after employment) and DSP 2 (Two years after hire).
- Must have received training or demonstrate prior experience in principles of good nutrition, proper food preparation and storage, menu planning, housekeeping and sanitation regulations, recognition of early signs of illness and need for professional assistance, universal precautions, and knowledge of community services and resources.
1.1.2 Duties and Responsibilities
- Address basic care needs of clients, including but not limited to the following: Assist in life skills, such as bathing, physical rescue, and wheelchair assistance—activities such as bathing, grooming, and dressing to train residents in Activities of Daily Living.
- Converse with residents to maintain positive behaviors and promote social interaction.
- Prepare and Serve meals. Observe and document residents’ behavior, such as speech, feeding patterns, disruptive behavior, change of condition, etc.
- Document, report, and review residents’ daily progress, needs, medical issues, and behaviors.
- Assist in transporting residents to and from medical appointments, outings, and special activities.
- Ability to calmly and repetitively model appropriate behavior in strenuous or challenging situations.
- Ability to react to situations, i.e., rescue, preventing a resident from hurting themselves and others.
- Address basic household needs including but not limited to the following: custodial, maintenance, schedules and routines, record keeping, documentation, etc.
- Participate in the assessment process and collection of client data.
- Participate in designing and implementing each client’s care program (ISP), collecting and analyzing ongoing data, and other assigned documentation about each client’s ISP.
- Attend Interdisciplinary Team meetings when required.
- Communicate with a vast array of people involved with the facility.
- Participate in all necessary orientation, in-service, and 12 hours of annual on-the-job training and staff meetings.
- Complete on-site orientation within 40 hours of hire.
- The Direct Care staff is a mandated reporter
1.1.3 Desired Qualifications
Six months to one year of direct care experience providing services to people with developmental disabilities with high medical need . Possess strong communicationskills .
