What are the responsibilities and job description for the Composite Manufacturing Technician position at Oak Engineering and Manufacturing?
About the Role
Oak is seeking a Composites Technician with hands-on experience in wet layup, vacuum infusion, and pre-preg composite fabrication methods. This role is for someone who understands the full lifecycle of composite part production, from mold preparation to final finishing, and can deliver showroom-quality automotive-gradecomponents.
As part of our manufacturing team, you will be responsible for fabricating high-quality composite parts, ensuring proper curing processes, and executing all necessary post-processing steps such as trimming, sanding, buffing, and painting. Attention to detail is critical, as our parts must meet aerospace and high-end automotive aesthetic and structural standards.
Additionally, while not a requirement, experience with part duplication—taking an existing part, refining its surface, and creating a mold to replicate it—is highly valued.
Key Responsibilities
Composite Fabrication & Processing
- Perform wet layup, vacuum infusion, and pre-preg composite fabrication processes to produce high-quality parts.
- Prepare and apply resins, fibers, and core materials while ensuring proper material placement.
- Handle vacuum bagging, curing, and de-molding processes.
- Monitor curing cycles and adjust as necessary to achieve optimal results.
Post-Processing & Finishing
- Trim, sand, and refine cured parts to meet tight tolerances and aesthetic requirements.
- Buff and polish parts to showroom-quality automotive finishes when applicable.
- Perform bonding, painting, and sealing as needed.
Mold Preparation & Maintenance
- Clean and prep molds for repeated layups, ensuring release agents are applied properly.
- Repair and maintain molds to ensure consistent part quality and longevity.
Additional Valued Skills (Desired but not required)
Ability to duplicate existing parts:
- Sand, bondo, and prep customer-supplied parts to create high-quality molds.
- Use those molds to manufacture composite replicas with precision.
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience in composite fabrication using wet layup, infusion, and pre-preg methods.
- Strong understanding of resins, fabrics (carbon fiber, fiberglass, Kevlar), and curing cycles.
- Experience in trimming, sanding, buffing, and painting composite parts to high visual and structural standards.
- Ability to read and follow technical drawings, work instructions, and specifications.
- Skilled at mold preparation and maintenance to ensure high-quality, defect-free parts.
- Familiarity with automotive-grade or aerospace composite standards is a plus.
- Preferred: Experience with part duplication and mold-making is a strong advantage.
