CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available with the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operations components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety, and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: In line with the focus of this fellowship, the selected fellow may be a part of:

  • 1. Obtaining selected factual information pertaining to the organization, its services, clients, and the organization/functions of the department/area assigned to:
    • a. Conduct research from the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) Program Manual to understand the functions and the roles of central cancer registries (CCRs);
    • b. Receive training to understand the general data collection process of CCRs;
    • c. Receive training to understand general cancer surveillance activities in the US.
  • 2. Following a period of orientation, the fellow shall be familiar with the available CCR surveillance datasets to:
    • a. Conduct research to review the documents of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) on data collection standards;
    • b. Conduct research to review the NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and learn SEER*Stat software;
    • c. Train for the understanding of the NPCR data variables and data quality improvement activities;
    • d. Train for the understanding of the US Cancer Statistics (USCS).
  • 3. Conducting research for applying acquired epidemiologic knowledge and skills, develop manuscripts on agreed-upon topics to:
    • a. Conduct literature reviews on the epidemiology and current clinical diagnostic and treatment recommendations;
    • b. Develop manuscript hypotheses and appropriate study questions;
    • c. Train for the evaluation and reporting on the data quality and completeness of topic-related data items;
    • d. Train for the process of evaluation of NPCR program evaluation instruments and other reports along with their results;
    • e. Prepare and submit manuscripts for CDC clearance;
    • g. Submit manuscripts for journal publication.
Learning Objectives: This fellowship will focus on training and professional development for the data quality and evaluation for some newly collected and/or rarely used NPCR data elements, including different cancer stage system data, multiple cancer treatment variables, and biomarkers for the major cancer sites. The training for the ORISE participant will be focused around the analysis of cancer surveillance communities and researchers.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 30, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination). Additionally, the fellow will follow the telework schedule based on guidance and recommendations applicable to all Division staff.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's or doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years, or be currently pursuing.

  • Experience with cancer surveillance standards and epidemiological studies.
