Description
The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) conducts cutting-edge research to develop innovative engineering solutions that enhance national security and infrastructure resilience. What will I be doing?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will engage in research focused on network infrastructure optimization, cybersecurity enhancements, and emerging networking technologies. This opportunity will involve hands-on experimentation with network devices, performance analysis, and the development of security best practices aligned with Department of Defense (DoD) standards.
Through this experience, you will gain foundational knowledge in networking protocols, device configuration, cybersecurity principles, and automation techniques. You will develop practical skills in troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and secure network design while collaborating with experienced researchers. Additionally, this opportunity provides exposure to real-world applications of advanced networking within a research environment, fostering professional development and career growth in the field of network engineering.

What is the anticipated start date? May 2025
Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a full-time two-month research appointment. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the appointment provisions?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by ERDC-ITL. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications

- Familiarity with networking concepts, including routing, switching, and firewalls
- Basic knowledge of Cisco, Juniper, or other networking platforms (even if just from coursework)
- Understanding of network security principles, such as encryption and authentication
- Strong problem-solving mindset – Ability to analyze and troubleshoot networking issues conceptually
- Willingness to learn – Self-motivated to gain hands-on experience and certifications
- Communication skills – Can explain technical concepts in simple terms
