Purpose:
The Grid Systems Architecture Group (GSA) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is actively seeking applicants for an Advanced Grid Systems Design, Modelling and Control (Temporary) staff position to conduct research on futuristic distribution power systems and the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and microgrids. You should be capable of developing innovative solutions for the next-generation distribution power grid, leveraging microgrids, DERs, and advanced grid architectures, and validating them through software and experimental demonstrations. This role requires understanding of distribution power systems, including grid resilience and optimization techniques to support the evolution of modern energy infrastructure.
You should possess a solid background in the power distribution industry, team leadership, technical leadership in grid modernization projects, and industry experience in planning, designing, and implementing power system solutions.
Major Duties / Responsibilities:
- Conduct R&D projects in distribution power systems, focusing on grid modernization, microgrids, and DER integration, and contribute to the expansion of R&D initiatives by leveraging multidisciplinary collaboration, industry experience, and innovative technologies.
- Develop and implement solutions for the next-generation distribution grid, emphasizing resilience, energy markets, and decentralized energy management.
- Support project management efforts, ensuring the successful execution of R&D initiatives that align with industry needs.
- Network and promote collaborative R&D efforts with internal divisions, DOE, industry partners, and utilities, enhancing knowledge exchange and accelerating the adoption of emerging grid technologies.
- Participate in experimental validation of innovative distribution grid architectures, ensuring real-world applicability and scalability.
- Model distribution power systems.
- Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, industry partners and others and at technical meetings such as IEEE sponsored conferences.
Basic Qualifications:
- A M.S. in electrical engineering with a focus on power systems with two years of relevant experience.
- Experience related to designing distribution power systems.
- Experience with energy power markets, and regulation.
- Experience in coding platforms such as Python and Matlab.
- Experience in Project Management.
- Good oral and written communication skills to make presentations to sponsors and others and to prepare reports, proposals, and publications/journal articles.
- Strong interpersonal skills to support team building and leadership.
- Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer-reviewed journals, or presentations at national meetings, are expected.
- A strong commitment to scientific integrity is an important requirement
Some travel will be required for this position.
