Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot motion control systems and mentor team members in advanced electronics diagnostics.
  • Lead the design and documentation of electrical assemblies, including chassis layout, wiring diagrams, and light mechanical fabrications.
  • Provide expert-level oversight during fabrication and installation of instrument control systems.
  • Manage procurement, inventory, and quality control of critical electrical assemblies and components.
  • Lead design and testing of prototype systems and platforms.
  • Support instrument maintenance, upgrades, and new installations.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and operational standards (work control, preventative maintenance, etc.).
  • Provide technical support for Data Acquisition and Control systems, with opportunities to contribute to continuous system improvements.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • AS degree in electronics or related field, plus 7 years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Strong hands-on experience in motion control systems and electronic troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in reading/interpreting schematics, technical documents, and manufacturer datasheets.
  • Skilled in using test equipment: multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc.
  • Comfortable with basic mechanical tasks and tools.
  • Familiar with Windows OS and Microsoft Office tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing layouts, schematics, and electrical documentation.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, Creo, or SolidWorks).
  • Familiarity with common motion control and PLC hardware (e.g., Galil, Parker, Allen-Bradley).
  • Prior experience in national labs, research facilities, or other scientific/industrial settings.
  • Exposure to data acquisition systems, automation platforms, or beamline technologies.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Occasionally provide support outside of normal hours to meet the 24/7 operational needs of HFIR and SNS. This position operates during typical daytime office hours, but some off-hours and weekend support is required to support the 24/7 operational needs of the HFIR and SNS.
