Job Title: Assistant Principal Middle School

Supervisor: Middle School Principal

Summary:  The Assistant Principal assists the building principal in organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff and parents. This includes such responsibilities as: leading, directing, counseling, and supervising a variety of personnel and programs; creating effective parent, teacher, and child communications; supporting, encouraging, mentoring, and evaluating staff; fostering teamwork between teachers and among staff and parents; and managing budget items. The Assistant Principal acts in the capacity of the principal during the principal’s absence from the school. The Assistant Principal is responsible for supervision and oversight of the athletic program of the assigned Medford School District middle school.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Administrative/Organizational

  • Promote a positive, safe and caring climate for learning that supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and communities served.
  • Represent the school in a variety of settings (e.g. community forums, parent-teacher organizations, etc.) for maintaining ongoing community support for educational goals and assisting with issues related to school environment.
  • Work closely with the school principal to increase parental involvement, strengthen school to home communications and leverage community partnerships to improve student outcomes.
  • Support principal in a variety of ways (e.g. policy implementation, meeting facilitation, etc.) for ensuring the smooth operation of administration.
  • Support the building principal with the administration of the school.
  • Prepare and implement a master athletic department budget.
  • Maintain athletic equipment inventories.
  • Prepare a master sports calendar that includes conference and non-conference games/events.
  • Coordinate gym and athletic field use for practices, games, and activities year-round.
  • Work with coaching staff and transportation provider to schedule transportation for all away contests.
  • Seek and recommend suitable competition for all non-conference events/games.
  • Provide officials for all 9-12 contests. Confirm official’s contracts and all non-conference contest agreements.
  • Secure game workers for athletic contests, chain crews, announcers, clock operators, score keepers, line judges, etc. and submit the list of contracted workers for that contest to the event supervisor prior to the event.
  • Submit athletic expense request sheets for payment to the district office or high school designee.
  • Coordinate the collection of rosters for program information as needed.
  • Disseminate OSAA materials and enforce OSAA rules and regulations, including player eligibility.
  • Collect, file, and notify athletes and coaches regarding student eligibility as it pertains to the OSAA and MSD 549C policies.
  • Coordinate field trip requests for OSAA approved activities and clubs.
  • Coordinate community athletic facilities use in conjunction with district facilities department.
  • Coordinate registration of student clubs and activities.
  • Other related duties as assigned. 

Personnel Management

  • Assists with hiring of licensed and classified staff and supports the evaluation of assigned licensed and classified staff.
  • Recruits and hires all coaches and athletic support staff.
  • Evaluates assigned personnel, including all athletic program staff and coaches, for the purpose of ensuring that high standards are achieved and programs continue to grow.
  • Act as a resource person and coordinator for all coaches. Provide day-to-day supervision to coaches. Recommend personnel actions to principal.
  • Provide training and in-services to coaches. Ensure that coaches are knowledgeable about program values and philosophy through regular (at least once per season) in-services, feedback, and dissemination of the Athletic Handbook and key policies.
  • Conduct coaches’ meetings.
  • Track and monitor all mandatory trainings required by the District (i.e. Safe Schools modules, etc.) and coaching certifications as required by OSAA.
  • Complete post-season conferences with head coaches after the conclusion of their sport season.

 

Leadership-Overall

  • Assists in implementing instructional strategies, school-wide communication and student behavior supports, including supporting the needs of diverse learners, delivery methods, assessment, and staff development for improvement of instruction.
  • Assists with student orientation; counseling; discipline; due process; data collection; student recognition; and securing student services with outside agencies.
  • Models the characteristics of effective leadership including energy, integrity, high-level communication skills, etc.
  • Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with all stakeholders using excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Attends meetings and participates on committees as requested.
  • Establish and maintain a climate for the school’s athletic program that promotes the District’s athletics program philosophy and goals. Foster inclusiveness and respect for diverse student athletes.
  • Make recommendations for improvement of the program to the building principal and student support coordinator.
  • Assume responsibility for the interpretation and implementation by coaches of all board policies, school rules and procedures, codes of conduct, applicable laws, safety expectations, and athletic handbook.
  • Provide leadership and a visible presence at athletic events.
  • Assume responsibility for the safety of all facets of the athletic program; coordinate with District Safety Officer, Student Support Coordinator and Athletic Trainers as needed.
  • Establish, in collaboration with Student Support Coordinator, an athletic code; ensure participants know about it; implement it in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Attends professional growth sessions for the purpose of keeping his/her knowledge current with changing laws and regulations.
  • Participates in regional OSAA meetings.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:         

  • All employees of the Medford School District have responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
  • Supervises staff as assigned.
  • Supervise home athletic contests, and arrange for others to do so. Supervise away games as needed. Acts as host to officials and visiting teams. Oversee employees and volunteers who work the contest.

Education and Experience: 

  • Previous successful teaching experience required.
  • Experience working with secondary students.
  • Previous experience as a school level administrator preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Must be eligible for or properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for assignment as an administrator.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license required.

Interpersonal Skills:  Ability to interact appropriately with teachers, staff, members of the community and students. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; Contributes to building a positive team spirit.

Language Skills:  Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing. Preference may be given to applicants who are fluent in both English and Spanish. Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small and large group situations to students and other school staff.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and area.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:  General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e-mail, internet software, spreadsheets, teaching software and word processing software.
