What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Technicians position at Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital?
Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital in Oakhurst, NJ is looking for surgical technicians to join our 70 person strong team. Our ideal candidate is a self-starter, punctual, and hard-working.
Responsibilities
· Provides compassionate care to patients
· Performs physical examinations; records observations on patients.
· Knowledge of proper use of the EKG, Capnograph, Pulse Ox, Pet Map, Doppler, Bair Hugger, etc.
· Assists the doctor in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery (clipping and cleaning surgical site); assists the doctor in administering anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
· Gives injections (SQ, IM, IV) and administers oral medications in accordance with hospital policy.
· Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
· Assists in restraining pets (cat and dogs) in a fear free method when necessary.
· Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as heartworm/tick screens, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
· Perform routine dental ATP’s (chart, probe, xray, scale and polish, before & after pictures)
· Takes digital radiographs wearing PPE.
· Update patients EMR surgical soap.
· Create dental before and after pictures for the owners and print the dental radiographs
· Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
· Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
· Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
· Proper packing and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
· Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
Qualifications
- Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a technician, surgical experience a big plus.
