Summary of Purpose

Manages, develops, and maintains the Virtual Desktop Environment (VDI). This includes the servers hosting the virtual desktops. Development of virtual desktop images. Virtualization of desktop applications via App Volumes and thin apps. Management and customization of user profile data through DEM and AD Group Policies. Creation of desktop pools, managing permissions, and system upkeep.

Typical Duties

This description is intended to indicate the types of duties and responsibilities requested of the employee assigned this title. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties and responsibilities that may be required :

1. Work in conjunction with campus Desktop Support Managers and Desktop Support Specialist to meet the needs of end user computing for OCC staff, faculty and students.

2. Acquires, maintains, and expands knowledge of relevant product offerings, current support policies, and methods of support delivery to provide technically accurate solutions; ensures security procedures are implemented and enforced.

3. Create and maintain standardized and specialized virtual desktop images to be use college wide to serve the needs of the staff and students.

4. Reviews IT trouble tickets and service requests; analyzes, draws conclusions, and provides recommendations that strive for continuous improvement of customer service.

5. Create, test and maintain visualized application to be used the VDI environment.

6. Develops, defines, and communicates user / technical service policies for products / services supported by OCC.

7. Provides technical consulting and recommendations to management and end-user departments in all campus related areas; may also consult on other campuses.

8. Researches new technologies and computing tools with recommendations for applying them.

9. Work with system administrators and network infrastructures teams to help maintain and develop the VDI environment.

10. Maintains relevant technical documentation on all VDI related technologies.

11. Continually seeks feedback from campus community regarding satisfaction with services provided through the virtual desktop environment.

12. Serves on appropriate committees; participates in development of campus initiatives.

13. Performs other related duties, as assigned.

14. Ability to work additional hours, as needed.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Skilled in verbal and written communications

  • Knowledge of Microsoft operating systems and application software
  • Knowledge of LAN and WAN architecture and operations
  • Knowledge of application visualization through App Volumes, thin apps, and RDS host servers
  • Knowledge of VMware Horizon View, horizon client., and VMware Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM)
  • Knowledge of VMware vSphere with vCenter vSAN and vRealize Operations
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in customer service practices
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performance management and supervisory relationships
  • Able to build constructive and effective relationship at all levels of the organization
  • Able to consistently model the highest levels of support orientation and professionalism

Minimum Education and Experience

EDUCATION : Associate's degree and at least six (6) years of experience in Information Technologies, including at least three (3) years of experience supporting a VMware virtual desktop environment; or eight (8) years or more of position-relevant experience in Information Technologies, including at least three (3) years of experience supporting a VMware virtual desktop environment (these experiences may run concurrently with the experience requirements below). Bachelor's degree (Information Systems or related field preferred) preferred.

EXPERIENCE : Four (4) years of experience in Information Technologies, including at least three (3) years of experience supporting a VMware virtual desktop environment. Extra consideration will be given for : VMware certifications, VMware Certified Professional (VCP-DCV) Desktop and Mobility Track (VCPDTM). Experience with higher education applications preferred.
