The Hospice Care Consultant (HCC) is responsible for implementing a successful business strategy, building brand awareness of Oakland Hospice, and to be a reliable contact for referral sources. Referral sources include physicians, senior care providers, discharge planners, social workers, community associations, and sometimes the patients or families facing a life-limiting illness.


Often times the HCC is the first step for patients, families, physicians, and community partners to access end-of-life care. This position must rely on actively listening to the needs of these referrals and being the liaison between them and Oakland Hospice. The HCC will provide guidance and offer in-depth understanding of the decisions needed to start care.


This position reports to, and partners with, the Executive Director. HCCs will be able to appropriately evaluate market potential, offer insight on market strategies, and account management driving the hospice census with qualified hospice referrals.


As part of the Oakland Hospice team, the HCC will exhibit upbeat and dedicated customer service, approach tasks with a team orientated focus, and strive to meet the critical needs of our patients, their caregivers, and our referral partners.


Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Drive growth through developing and maintaining competitive market analysis, develop strategic sales strategy, goals and plans and through the execution of individual community sales plans.
  • Champion external business development within the greater community, including (but not limited to) conducting community outreach, building and maintaining relationships with key referral sources, and identifying market opportunities for new lead generation.
  • Identify leads through community outreach, referrals, and networking to build new relationships with businesses/organizations while maintaining relationships with current professional providers
  • Coordinate, support and mange marketing events, creatively introducing Oakland Hospice to new referral sources and maintaining relationships with existing sources
  • Communicate with family members, doctor’s offices, and other referral sources to align their needs with our services.
  • Respond in person, by phone, or email to all prospect inquiries timely.
  • Prepare and submit weekly/monthly reports to Executive Director.
  • Special projects and/or additional job duties as needed when requested by the Executive Director.

Job Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of inside or outside sales and marketing experience targeting healthcare accounts required.
  • Proven track record of successful account management and growth.
  • Solid ability to identify key market changes and market opportunities.
  • Ability to work independently and without close supervision in addition to working within a team.
  • Strong work ethic, customer focus, and relationship building skills.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Energetic and outgoing personable demeanor.
  • Ability to focus on new business development, as well as continued contact with current business.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings as required.
  • Experience with MS Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Be able to pass a motor vehicle and background check.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant use of manual dexterity, auditory and visual skills and gross motor skills with frequent use of bi-manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to reach, bend, twist, squat, kneel, push and pull.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements including simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation.
  • Occasional sitting, frequent walking and constant standing.
