Job Summary:
The Dietitian in an acute care hospital setting is responsible for providing comprehensive nutritional care to patients with a variety of medical conditions. This role involves assessing patients' nutritional needs, developing individualized nutrition plans, and collaborating with the healthcare team to optimize patient outcomes. The Dietitian will work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to manage and monitor dietary interventions, including specialized nutrition support such as Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) and Peripheral Parenteral Nutrition (PPN). The dietitian will also coordinate the Dietary Department’s daily nutritional services provided to patients, families and staff of OakLeaf Surgical.

- Evaluate patients’ nutritional needs based on their medical condition, lab results, and clinical status and provide recommendations.
- Create and implement customized meal plans based on individual goals, preferences, and health conditions.
- Review blood work, electrolyte levels, and other laboratory data to determine nutritional deficits and the need for enteral and parenteral nutrition.
- Design and recommend appropriate TPN or PPN formulations tailored to each patient’s specific needs. This includes determining the right balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Monitor patients for tolerance and effectiveness of TPN or PPN, including assessing for signs of complications such as infection, metabolic abnormalities, or fluid imbalances. Make necessary adjustments to the nutritional formulas based on ongoing assessments, patient feedback, and changes in clinical status.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient progress and coordinate care.
- Maintain accurate and thorough records of all patient interactions, assessments, and nutrition care plans in the electronic medical record.
- Stay current with the latest research and advancements in clinical nutrition and incorporate evidence-based practices into patient care.
- Ensure adherence to hospital policies, clinical guidelines, and regulatory requirements related to nutrition care.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of nutrition-related protocols and standards.
- Assists in the planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluation and directing of the Dietary Department, its programs and activities.
- Meets with the administrator, medical and nursing staff, as well as other related departments in planning food service programs as needed or requested.
- Participate, evaluate and implement recommendations from the hospital’s Performance Improvement Committee as needed or requested.
- Serve on various committees of the facility as required by existing regulations.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining an ongoing quality improvement program for the dietary and inpatient department.
- Participate in survey inspections conducted by authorized government/regulatory agencies.
- Develop and maintain dietary objectives and standards.
- Assist in developing, implementing and coordinating department policies and procedures, care plans and dietary manuals.
- Assure that menus are developed, maintained, approved and filed in accordance with established policies and procedures and in compliance with physician orders.
- Provide nutritional education to physicians and/or other health care team members.
- Proctor the Serve-Safe examination for all dietary staff as needed.
Qualifications
- Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
- Bachelor’s degree in food and nutritional sciences or a related field of study is required.
- Master’s degree is preferred.
- Two (2) or more years of food and nutrition experience in healthcare industry required.
- Registration with the American Dietetic Association required.
- State of Wisconsin Registered Dietician licensure required.
