High School Dean of Student Life

Full-Time (12-month), Exempt, Category 2


General

The Deans of Student Life are responsible for overseeing student-related, co-curricular areas of the school. The Deans of Student Life report to the High School Principal and are members of the High School Leadership Team.

Primary Duties

Student Discipline

a) Student Policies: Develop student policies outside the scope of the academic/curricular programs and athletics. This includes primarily, but is not limited to, student mentoring, discipline and activities.

b) Faculty and Staff Training: Plan and direct New and Returning Faculty/Staff Orientation regarding student issues.

c) Campus Handbook and Campus Planner: Coordinate the development, revision and updating of the policies in the student campus handbook. Revise and produce the campus planner and distribute to the students at the beginning of the school year.

d) Student Discipline: Oversee the student discipline program of the school. Make recommendations to the Principal and/or Head of School for the suspension or expulsion of students. Oversee the maintenance of student discipline records via AXIS. Coordinate and supervise detention with the support of the campus supervisors. Manage “Anonymous Alerts” program to be notified of school community issues.

e) Attendance Program: Develop attendance policies. Monitor and oversee the attendance program. Oversee and manage the 3rd party program (SchoolPass) to manage attendance. Manage SchoolPass’ wellness check for staff and students.

Student Counseling

a) Academic: Monitor student grades each grading period, meet with students as needed, and make recommendations to the Principal regarding academic probation and counseling-out of students.

b) Personal: Meet with students and parents as needed regarding personal counseling issues. Partner with the Office of Spiritual Life and the SEL counselor to provide social emotional support. Communicate with teachers and others as needed.

Student School Programs

a) Parent/Student Communication: Coordinate the communication of information to families regarding major activities/student life issues throughout the year.

b) New Student Orientation: Plan and onboard all freshmen and transfer students so that they fully understand and embrace school culture, values, and policies.

c) Grade Level Retreats: Plan the annual freshman river trip. Coordinate and direct the 12th grade retreat in partnership with the Office of Spiritual Life. Partner with the Office of Spiritual Life in planning the Sophomore and Junior retreats.

d) Grade Level Meetings: Coordinate and direct monthly grade level meetings. Work with student leadership to ensure all pertinent information is disseminated.

e) Community Assembly: Produce community assemblies with the student activities director.

f) Senior Class Events: Assist in the planning and coordination of all Senior events (e.g. senior lounge, senior beach day, senior retreat, etc.). Ensure that communication with parents is thorough and timely. Supervise all senior events.

g) Student Activities: Work with the Student Activities Director in overseeing the student activity programs and student leadership of the school. Supervise and provide supervision for all student activities.

h) Advisory Groups: Advise the Spiritual Life Director in placing students in advisory groups (9th-12th). Select appropriate teachers to be Advisors for each group.

Teacher Supervision

a) Teacher Evaluation and Observations: Observe teachers throughout the school year. Conduct formal observations with selected teachers during the second quarter and 3rd quarter, as needed.

b) Administrative Oversight for a Department: Provide administrative oversight of an assigned department and work directly with the department chair (alternating departments).

c) Faculty Supervision Duties: Assign teachers to supervision duties and oversee supervision of students before and after school and at lunch. Set up the supervision schedule and serve as a supervisor, on a rotating basis, along with faculty and other members of the administration.

d) Faculty Chaperones: Work with the administration and Student Activities Director to assign faculty chaperones for student activities, as needed. Chaperone student dances and activities, as needed.

Staff Management

a) Supervise and manage the Office of Student Life Assistant, Attendance Officer, High School Receptionist, Student Activities Director, and campus security teams (campus supervisors and contracted security guards).

b) Conduct evaluations of staff three times a year using Folio.

c) Complete and submit staff timecards at the end of each pay period.

Other

a) Accreditation: Assist in the accreditation process by leading the areas related to this job description.

b) Admission: Serve on the Admission Committee and make recommendations as needed.

c) Development/Public Relations: Represent the non-academic/curricular departments for press releases related to significant student news. Work with faculty representatives to ensure regular reporting of such news. Attend key development events.

d) Athletics: Attend and supervise assigned athletic events. (Note: Deans cannot coach a team due to their supervision responsibilities)

e) Security: Serve as the liaison for the school security program. Coordinate with Security personnel and Campus Supervisor to ensure student safety. Prepare follow-up reports as needed. Lead the Security Team meetings every quarter.

f) Crisis Management and Campus Safety: Oversee the crisis management protocols and training for the school. Oversee the use of BrightArrow emergency communications systems to communicate with faculty, staff, students, and families. Manage emergency supplies (e.g. emergency foods, search and rescue equipment, etc.)

g) Master Calendar: Oversee the school master calendar and manage all campus events. Work with facilities and both campuses to schedule all events (e.g., athletics, academics, performing arts/visual arts, advancement, etc.). Propose each year’s school calendars for senior administration approval.

h) Facilities Committee: Act as member of the facilities committee, coordinating school events and community organizations that use the campus facilities.

i) Student IDs and OneCards: Partner with the yearbook staff to manage student picture day and student ID disbursement. Oversee and produce student OneCards for all students.

j) Student Parking: Oversee and direct student parking program. Order and distribute parking passes and supervise the daily parking operation to ensure compliance with school policies and determine future parking requirements.

k) Final Exam Schedule: Assist in the coordination of final exam schedules.

l) Student Awards: Recommend non-academic awards with input from the faculty. Participate in the annual awards program. Produce Senior Awards night in conjunction with the Academics, Arts and Athletics.

m) Drug Education and Prevention Programs: Create and facilitate drug education and prevention programs for the student body. Coordinate with canine handlers as a part of the drug/alcohol prevention program.

n) Other: Other things as needed under the direction of the Principal and/or Head of School.

7. Required Qualifications

a) Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a Master’s Degree preferred

b) Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills

c) Computer proficiency in MS Office and other online platforms

d) Commitment to a lifestyle above reproach in line with OCS Statement of Faith and Biblical Worldview.
