What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ceramics Teacher position at Oakwood School?
This position will oversee the Ceramics curriculum for Grades 7-12 and will include coordinating firings for other programs (i.e. enrichment) other departments, etc. The Ceramics Instructor is a member of the Visual Arts Department, and is directly overseen by the VA Department Chair, along with the Middle School and High School Principals.
- B.A., B.F.A. or B.S. in a relevant discipline; Master’s degree preferred.
- 5-7 years of prior teaching experience is preferred.
- 5-7 years working in a ceramics studio is preferred.
- Experience in preparation and application of slips, engobes, oxides, waxes and a variety of cone-5 glazes is required.
- Experience with electric kiln loading and firing is required.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development in both subject matter and methodology.
- Prepares lessons in collaboration and alignment with other members of the department.
- Evaluates student progress through various modes of assessment.
- Keeps student records, including online grades.
- Implements a wide array of classroom activities to address multiple learning styles.
- Communicates regularly with student-support team members: parents, other teachers, student services, deans, and other administrators.
- Provides ongoing student feedback, both informal and formal, including written narrative evaluations and regular peer-to-peer critiques.
- Meets with students and families as needed.
- Treats students equitably, is sincerely interested in them as individuals, and responds to their needs.
- Integrates culturally responsive and anti-biased teaching practices into the classroom and is committed to professional growth on equity and inclusion.
- Experience in guiding and managing student potters in an environment that fosters trust and mutual respect.
- Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of ceramics skills and techniques to beginning 9-12th grade students.
- Help students prepare for and mount recurring exhibits and special arts festival days.
- Manage all firings and operations in the Kiln House including loading and unloading Kiln and firing all class work
- Manage the Ceramics budget in cooperation with the Visual Art Department Chair.
- Oversee purchases for all materials and equipment in the Ceramics Studio and Kiln House and manage the learning spaces for optimal instruction. This includes the following:
- Receiving deliveries
- Ordering replacement parts as needed, monitoring supplies
- Preparing, managing budget - ordering supplies including clay, laundry, glazes, slips, wax
- Work with Chair to manage CalArts/CYP/Special Topics schedule and materials
- Repairing/Maintaining kiln shelves
- Maintain/Clean Kiln House
- May serve as an Advisor to a grade-level group of students.
- May serve as an Advisor to an Affinity Group.
- Will teach in Oakwood’s Immersion program.
- Actively engages in the life of the school.
