Rehabilitation and Therapy Internship

Oakwood is a locally owned, not-for-profit, faith-based organization that has served Madison-area seniors since 1948. Oakwood operates campuses in Madison, each offering a full continuum of care and services. Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge is located on the east side of Madison, and Oakwood Village University Woods is located on the west side of Madison.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

This role is an excellent opportunity for pre-rehabilitative professionals to gain hands-on experience with patients and understanding of the day-to-day operations in a subacute rehab department in a skilled nursing facility by providing daily clinic organization, equipment restocking, and hands-on interaction with residents by carrying out prescribed exercise programs determined by treating therapists of the department. Work side by side with the therapy team to enhance mobility and self-care function while learning about practitioner realities in healthcare.

This position reporting to the Sr. Director of Therapy. There are two openings with one intern at our west campus on the west side of Madison and one at the east campus on the east side of Madison.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBLITIES: (not intended to be an all inclusive list)

• Tidies gym spaces, manages equipment cleaning and storage.
• Carries out specific, prescribed exercise programs with skilled nursing facility short- and long-term residents.
• Participates in care planning meetings and other treatments as additional assists when indicated by therapy plans of care.
• Assists with properly fitting new admits with durable medical equipment prior to their admission.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• This internship is open to current Undergraduate or Graduate students.
• Studying Physical or Occupational Therapy, or related field preferred.
• Coursework in kinesiology, biomechanics, psychology, and anatomy/physiology beneficial.
• Driven, curious, and self-motivated to learn and stretch self in subacute environment.
• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal with ability to adjust approach according to current audience.

This internship will last from 8-12 weeks, depending on the availability of intern. There is a possibility that the internship could continue into the fall on a part-time basis, depending on availability of the intern.
