JOB SUMMARY: The Physician Assistant (PA)/Nurse Practitioner (NP) may provide any medical service as directed by the supervising physician, when the service is within the PA or NP's skills, training and experience, forms a component of the physician's scope of practice, is included in the written agreement, and is provided with the appropriate amount of supervision in keeping with the accepted standards of medical practice. The PA/NP shall augment the physician's data gathering abilities and assist the supervising physician in reaching decisions and instituting care plans for the physician's patients. The PA/NP shall know his/her limitations and refer to the supervising physician when appropriate and/or as directed by the supervising physician.
As part of the medical encounter, the PA/NP will:
- Gather data (medical history, physical examination, order laboratory or radiological data)
- Analyze and interpret the data (assessment/differential diagnosis)
- Develop a treatment plan (further testing, pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy, watchful observation, referral and follow-up)
- Treat the patient based on acceptable standards of care in women’s health
- Assess the progress of treatment and altar plan as necessary (management)
- Document the encounter in the medical record including dictating or writing progress notes, history and physicals, discharge summaries and other necessary documentation.
- Complete additional paperwork/electronic transmission as needed by the patient and condition (i.e. WIC forms)
- The PA/NP in concert with the supervising physician will provide treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, preventative care and health education
- Make appropriate referrals to other health professionals and agencies
- Consistently demonstrate internal and external quality customer service standards to all that request assistance, responding in a professional manner.
Clinical procedures which may be performed as part of the practice are:
- Phlebotomy including starting IV lines, venipuncture
- Administering intramuscular, intradermal and subcutaneous injections
- Insertion/removal of urinary catheters
- Electrocardiogram
- Collect genitourinary specimens for analysis and culture
- Control of hemorrhage
- Wound care including applying, cleaning and changing dressings, minor debridement, packing and aspiration of seromas and hematomas and care/suturing of minor lacerations
- Removal of foreign bodies
- Incision and drainage or aspiration of abscesses, cysts, seromas of peritoneum, soft tissue, muscle and extremities and closure of skin
- Administration of local anesthetic
- Removal of sutures, staples, drains
- Removal of dermatologic abnormalities
- Provide counseling and instruction regarding common patient problems
- May execute and relay medical regimens
- Sign for and distribute pharmaceutical samples
- Order, prescribe and administer controlled substances Category II-V with an active DEA number
- Prescribe and dispense drugs, pharmaceutical aids and devices
- Initiate appropriate evaluation and management for emergency situations including performance of CPR in case of emergency
- Carrying out aseptic and isolation techniques
- Assist in procedural areas for procedures within supervising physician’s granted privileges

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This job operates in a professional office. When the primary supervising physician is unavailable, alternate supervision will be performed by a substitute supervising physician who will meet all requirements as outlined in the legal regulations. Immediate access via telecommunications is always available.
Occupational Exposure:
Category 1 Has a high risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens
Category 2 Has a moderate risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens
Category 3 Has a low risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand: walk: use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, balance, stoop, and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week.
TRAVEL:
Some travel is required between hospitals and multiple office locations.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A Master’s degree, graduate of an appropriate and accredited Physician Assistant program, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, an active state license, and prescriptive license with the Federal Drug Enforcement agency. Skills required include complex problem solving using multiple resources in a manner appropriate to the situation, effective verbal and written communication skills, and experience using a computer, email, and office programs. Experience with an EMR is a plus or;
A Master’s degree, graduate of an appropriate and accredited Nurse Practitioner program, National Certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing, an active state RN license, and prescriptive license with the Federal Drug Enforcement agency. Skills required include complex problem solving using multiple resources in a manner appropriate to the situation, effective verbal and written communication skills, and experience using a computer, email, and office programs. Experience with an EMR is a plus.
