Job Summary
The Village of Oblong Police Department is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Police Officer. Entry level and lateral officers are encouraged to apply. The police officer is responsible for enforcing local, state, and federal laws serving to protect the citizens of the Village of Oblong, IL. It is required that the Police Officer comply with the Village of Oblong Police Department's rules and policies while ensuring justice and peace to all individuals.
Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas to deter and detect criminal activity
- Respond promptly to emergency calls and incidents
- Conduct thorough criminal investigations, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses
- Prepare detailed reports on incidents, arrests, and investigations
- Enforce traffic laws and regulations, ensuring public safety on roadways
- Manage conflicts effectively to de-escalate potentially volatile situations
- Provide first aid when necessary to assist individuals in emergencies
- Collaborate with community members to foster positive relationships and enhance public trust
- Ensuring the safety and security of the public by responding to emergencies, providing assistance to victims, and reducing or preventing involvement in crime
- Participating in and testifying at court hearings when required
- Processing incident reports with accurate detail and factual information
Skills
- Proficient in conflict management techniques to handle disputes effectively.
- Strong knowledge of criminal investigation procedures and best practices.
- Certification in first aid and CPR is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities to guide teams during critical situations.
- In-depth understanding of law enforcement protocols and regulations.
- Excellent report writing skills for documenting incidents accurately.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record for operational duties.
- Open to working various shifts such as evenings, weekends, nights, and holidays
- Ability to stay calm in stressful or high-risk situations
- Ability to deescalate situations and prevent harm from occurring
- Skilled at solving problems and using critical thinking
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Capability and desire to work in a collaborative manner with a wide range of people

Required and Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- A minimum of 21 years of age
- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship
- Possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License
- No records of arrest for misdemeanors or felonies
- Sufficient oral and written communication skills
