The Prototype Technician is responsible for developing and testing prototypes according to customer requirements and producing accurate cost estimates. In addition to reviewing customer-provided schematics, this position is responsible for developing the technical product drawings necessary for use in manufacturing.

Essential Duties

Analyze and interpret customer drawings, specifications, and requirements. Requires identification of missing and/or incomplete information, reverse designing customer-provided samples and verifying compliance with industry standards. (e.g., IPC/WHMA-A-620)

Independently create one-off, low-volume, prototype harnesses, and first-article products, ensuring accuracy and alignment with customer requirements. Includes developing an understanding of the operation, setup, and maintenance of the manufacturing equipment used in wire harness production.

Maintain accurate documentation and records of wire harness designs, modifications, and revisions.

Accurately enter relevant quote information into the company ERP system, including component parts, labor estimates, tooling or equipment needs, and any specialized training requirements.

Assist with creating detailed harness drawings to customer specifications utilizing CAD software. Coordinate design standards with manufacturing to ensure harnesses can be built in the most efficient manner.

Learn to design and build testing jigs for harness continuity testing which includes how to program and configure testing hardware and software.

Learn to operate product testing equipment and assist with testing procedure documentation.

Stay updated on industry trends, advancements in wire harness technology, and relevant regulations.

Observe required safety, quality, and service standards according to company policy.

Education And Experience

A minimum of 2 years’ experience creating, updating, and analyzing electrical component schematics with CAD software in a manufacturing environment. (e.g., CATIA, Zuken E3 series, Arcadia or similar)

Certificate, AAS, or relevant coursework in Engineering Design Technology or similar programs.

Microsoft Office/365 Suite proficiency necessary for general internal and external communication, developing internal documents, and documenting work-related processes or procedures.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

General electrical and mechanical knowledge required to create and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and utilize various assembly techniques.

Basic knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations, such as IPC/WHMA-A-620, MIL-STD-810, and UL standards.

Familiarity with manufacturing equipment and processes.

Excellent management skills which are necessary to effectively prioritize work and meet deadlines.

Solid communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and deductive reasoning skills.

Basic mathematical skills needed to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers and common fractions.

Willingness to work hands-on with prototype builds, first-article products, and testing equipment.

Capable of learning and incorporating new information, recalling processes, and maintaining focus with regular exposure to environmental distractions.

Physical Requirements

Must effectively communicate verbally and in writing, with or without reasonable accommodation (e.g., assistive devices or alternative formats).

Ability to use hands for frequent typing, with accommodations such as ergonomic keyboards, voice-to-text software, or adjustable workstations if needed.

Capability to handle, manipulate, and shift products/materials at close range, with potential accommodation like assistive tools or modified workflows.

Must observe, inspect, and document small product components at close range, view detailed schematics on a monitor, and distinguish colors, with accommodations such as magnifying devices, screen readers, or high-contrast displays if required.

Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, with accommodation like mechanical aids or team lift permitted as needed.

Ability to remain stationary for extended periods (e.g., during product testing, BOM creation, or drafting), with accommodation such as adjustable seating, standing desks, or scheduled breaks.

Accommodations should not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of others in the workplace or impose undue hardships on the company.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS

Climate-controlled, manufacturing environment with light industrial noise between 70-85 dB. Regular encounters with pedestrian and forklift traffic. Occasionally required work in a regular office environment while creating product drawings, performing data entry, or creating customer price estimates.
