21 hours per weekSchedule : Thurs, Fri, Sat : 9-5 (1 hour meal break)Examples of Duties
This position supports the programs and activities of the Youth Services librarians in their work with the children. The library assistant helps to design and prepare materials for programs and monitors the very popular drop-in craft program on Friday afternoons when there are up to 30-40 children in the building at one time. In addition this position had been part of the Puppet Players and helped perform puppet shows in the branches.This position answers patron inquiries pertaining to library hours, offices and personnel, and the availability and ability to place holds on popular or new publications.This position serves the children and their families at the Youth Services Information desk helping children find materials and place requests, assists children at the Internet and games computers, registers children for programs, and assists the librarians in preparing the program area and working with them in programs.This position may assist in processing children's library card applications for group visits, preparing our new materials for use and maintain replacement list receipts and reports, gathering materials for weeding review and the associated follow-up work, and arranging collections and lists.This position assists and supports the Summer Reading Program.May assist students with homework assignments as needed.

Ability to work harmoniously with peers, subordinates, and customers by actively creating an atmosphere of respect and inclusionAbility to understand and follow Ocean County Library policies and proceduresPerforms filing / shelving / searching tasks involving the use of the Dewey Decimal Classification System and alphabetical filing systems beyond the initial letter of a word.Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and / or manual recording and information systems used by the library including word processing, the library circulation and catalog modules, telephone system, photocopiers, fax machines, etc.Ability to meet Ocean County Library's Reference Competencies Level I within one year of employment.
Education and Experience Requirements
License : Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.To be appointed to the Senior Library Assistant title, applicants must meet all New Jerse Civil Service requirements. Successful completion of one year (30 semester hour credits) in a librarian technician course at an accredited college or university can be substituted for the above experience.Paid time off (vacation, sick)NJ State Defined Contribution Retirement Plan (DCRP)
