Reporting directly to the Senior Counsel, Ocean Fleet Services (OFS), the Claims, Risk, and Insurance Manager will be responsible for overseeing and managing all phases of the claims process, as well as procuring and renewing all insurance policies held by OFS and OFS-managed companies. This position will work closely with other members of the OFS team, as well as representatives from OFS-managed companies carrying out the following duties:

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities will include:
  • Claims Management and Adjusting: The Claims, Risk, and Insurance Manager will oversee all claims related to multiple business units, and will be specifically responsible for managing and adjusting marine personal injury claims. Will coordinate with the legal department to report and manage all claims to underwriters, and to develop the claim file. Regular contact with claimants, attorneys, and others to handle and settle claims. Responsibilities include receiving and reviewing claims; investigating claims, interviewing witnesses and taking statements; and working closely with claimants, insurance carriers, the legal department, and operations to ensure the timely reporting, processing, handling, and settlement of claims. Will also manage or oversee workers’ compensation claims, as well as claims associated with property and automobile losses.
  • Insurance Program Management: Coordinate procurement and renewals of all insurance policies for OFS and OFS-managed companies at the direction of the legal department. Will work in conjunction with the legal department, operations, and other internal constituencies to obtain information necessary for insurance renewals, and will develop, maintain, and report underwriting data to broker. Will develop key broker and insurance company relationships on behalf of the Company. Responsibilities will include process management, coordination of meetings, collecting and maintaining data, reviewing invoices, facilitating delivery of certificates of insurance, and collaborating internally on insurance budgets, costs, and reporting. Further, this role will also include the assessment of insurance documents from vendors for compliance with contractual requirements, and liaising with operations and/or vendors to ensure insurance requirements are met.

Additional Responsibilities will include:
  • Assisting in the development of more effective and streamlined insurance placement processes, claims management, and risk identification and mitigation.
  • Identifying claim and exposure trends and provide updates to the legal department and leadership; compiling and preparing reports regarding insurance policies and claims.
  • Working with insurance carriers and brokers to coordinate inspections or investigations.
  • Assisting with the development of risk management practices for OFS and OFS-managed companies.
  • Coordinating / conducting internal and external audits to ensure company programs are being effectively implemented.
  • Serving as a resource to legal, claims, operations, and other departments.
Qualifications Required:
Five years of progressive practical experience handling and adjusting marine claims, including skills related to investigations, litigation, negotiation, and damage/injury evaluation. Ability to analyze data, potential liability, and make informed recommendations regarding claim settlement.

Experience in the insurance industry with an insurer, broker, and/or insured’s risk management department, with a key understanding of marine insurance coverages is preferred. Experience in contract management, with a focus on reviewing insurance policies and insurance provisions in services agreements is also preferred but not required.

Must work well in both corporate and marine environments; knowledge or experience with marine vessel operations or commercial fishing operations is a plus.

Must be able to communicate and interface effectively with both claimants and underwriters.

Education/Experience Required:
A Bachelor’s degree in insurance, business administration, finance, risk management, or related field. Experience as an insurance adjuster or risk management specialist preferred. State insurance adjuster license, CMIP or AMIM certifications, and/or ARM or CIC certifications, or the willingness to work towards such licensures and certifications a plus.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Counsel of OFS. This person may be based out of the following office locations: Suffolk, Virginia; Reedville, Virginia; Abbeville, Louisiana; or Moss Point, Mississippi. Fully or partially remote positions will be considered for qualified candidates.

Regular travel to facilities and office locations will be required; anticipated to be approximately 15% per year.
