What are the responsibilities and job description for the Material Handler position at Ocean Spray?
Ocean Spray is a vibrant agricultural cooperative owned by more than 700 cranberry farmers in the United States, Canada and Chile, who have helped preserve the family farming way of life for generations. The cooperative’s cranberries are currently featured in more than a thousand great-tasting, good-for-you products in over 100 countries worldwide. With more than 2,000 employees and nearly 20 receiving and processing facilities, Ocean Spray is committed to managing our business in a way that respects our communities, colleagues and the environment.
Our Receiving Station, located in Chatsworth, NJ, is currently looking for a Material Handler to join our team. This facility is approximately 34,000 square feet and operates 4 days/week (10 hours/day) the majority of the year, but operates 7 days/week during our harvest season, which is our primary purpose. We support 16 farmer-owner families throughout NJ and receive up to 50-60 truckloads of cranberries per day during peak harvest. During harvest we ensure that our cranberries meet our high-quality standards and test every load that is delivered to us. The balance of the year is spent preparing for harvest. We assemble and repair the bins that the cranberries will be placed in for their travel to one of several freezer facilities until ready to be turned into cranberry concentrate, cranberry sauce or Craisins® Sweetened Dried Cranberries
Job Summary:
The Material Handler employee sorts and/or repairs defective wooden fruit bins, maintains cleanliness of bins and prepares bins for harvest while using appropriate tools in a safe manner during 80% of the calendar year, in addition to assisting with harvest operations during harvest season, 20% of the calendar year. Expectations of this position include:
- Maintain single minded focus on Safety, Quality, and Productivity at all times
- Must be able to safely operate a forklift once certified
- Must maintain excellent attendance/reliability Must be able to work overtime when required
- -especially during harvest season (late September to early November)
- Must be able to physically lift/move up to 50lbs repeatedly; up to 75lbs occasionally
- Responsible for the safe operation of tools, equipment and other machinery
- Must maintain accurate production, quality and operational records as required
- Ensure bin assembly for harvest season and maintain the cleanliness of all bins
- All other duties as assigned and/or needed during non-harvest and harvest season
Education:
- High school diploma or GED preferred
