Job Description:
The Transportation Dispatch Manager role within the Distribution Center (“DC”) at Ocean State Job Lot (“OSJL” and “Company”) is responsible for the effective utilization of drivers, equipment, and tools to maximize service and productivity while remaining compliant with state and federal regulations, and Company policies. This role oversees the day-to-day operations involved with managing drivers. In addition, this role provides transportation planning and routing along with coaching to drivers to improve service, safety, and productivity in support of company objectives. Additionally, this role manages a team of drivers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage, maintain and update Trimble Mobility (PeopleNet) application and oversee drivers’ use of Trimble Mobility system for eLogs and trip management. Analyze driver performance, provide feedback and coaching to drivers to improve performance, and provide clean data for performance reporting.
- Develop and distribute analytics and reports measuring key metrics on delivery performance and achievement of Company objectives to drive results.
- Properly utilize the WorkLife and Trimble Mobility systems to ensure the accuracy of the drivers’ payroll and incentives.
- Participate in the freight planning and routing process on a daily basis utilizing various software and knowledge.
- Oversee configuration of Transportation Management System (TMS) applications for daily planning and routing work by inbound and outbound teams; provide reporting and analysis support for department applications for operations and leadership.
- Handle incoming calls and ensure timely responses, including, but not limited to, calls from stores, drivers, and carriers, to quickly resolve issues.
- Effectively communicate all pertinent issues amongst the driver supervisor team to ensure all issues are handled.
- Develop and track continuous improvement targets for the Transportation Department. Document and maintain Transportation Department processes and information flow, touch points with other areas of the organization, and data sources for reporting.
- Influence positive associate morale and quality customer service, addressing issues with drivers as they arise, resolving issues, and including management and Human Resources, as needed.
- Independently identify opportunities to improve processes and reduce costs and recommend creative solutions.
- Maintain positive relations with drivers, stores, internal corporate stakeholders, and third-party partners.
- Ensure compliance with Company policies and state and federal regulations, and maintain appropriate and accurate documentation of the same, including, but not limited to, driver compliance for random drug screening, certification of violations and Motor Vehicle Record, and annual medical reviews.
- Partner with the Transportation Safety Manager and drivers to implement and administer company safety and accident reporting policies and procedures to measure and reduce the occurrence and cost of collisions, injuries, near-misses, and equipment damage.
- Partner with the Lead Driver Trainers with onboarding new drivers and retraining current drivers.
- Partner with the Fleet Manager with driver performance development and review processes.
- Manage associate performance, write performance reviews, and provide coaching and feedback. As needed, delegate work and follow up with team members to confirm timely completion of tasks.
- Assist with hiring, coaching, and disciplinary actions for team members as well as train new team members and act as a mentor to develop new teammates.
- Perform all duties with self-direction, independent judgment and minimal supervision.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience in dispatch and transportation operations is required.
- High School diploma or equivalent is required; a college degree is preferred.
- 2 or more years of supervisory experience is required.
- Experience with On Board Computer required; Trimble Mobility experience is preferred.
- Certified Transportation Professional certification is preferred.
- Strong understanding of tractor trailer operations and configuration.
- Proficiency in English is required; bilingual is preferred.
- Proficient with computer skills including the Google platform (i.e., Sites, Slides, Drive, Docs, Sheets), MS Office, and telephone skills.
Work Environment:
- Works primarily in a climate-controlled environment with the DC with minimal safety and health hazard potential.
- Works in an office environment remaining stationary at a desk, table, or computer workstation for extended periods of time. Frequently uses near vision for reading and computer tasks.

- On call to remotely cover the 24-hour dispatch line on average every fifth (5th) week. Some weekend work may be required during seasonal times depending on the needs of the business.
The schedule for this shift is: Monday - Friday, 12:00am - 9:00am.
