JOB SUMMARY:

Performs all duties of a mechanic including preventive maintenance, routine maintenance, routine and complex repairs and inspections.  Assists supervisor in technical support functions of and acts as the point person on the floor for other mechanics/maintenance staff.  Ensures maintenance and repairs of a diverse fleet of buses, vans and trucks according to NYS DOT regulations and program specifications.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acts as point person on the floor to assist other mechanics with trouble shooting and hands on training.
  • Receives training on new and changing maintenance techniques, tools and equipment; provides training to mechanics.
  • Monitors diagnostic equipment and tests to ensure up-to-date test procedures are followed.
  • Attends technical training (as assigned) for diesel/gas engine, chassis, electrical and related areas.
  • Provides hands on technical support and coaching to all mechanics.
  • Studies material handling methods and suggest changes to reduce handling costs.
  • Confers with supervisor, mechanics and transit operators to discuss problems, determine causes, listen to engines, fit and operate special test equipment and test drive vehicles.
  • Maintains bus fleet to DOT specifications and expectations.
  • Ensures safety of vehicles released to the road following repairs; follows pre-trip inspection techniques when leaving the yard to test drive vehicles.
  • Maintains vehicles of other OCO program for routine and casualty repairs to manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Makes all required repairs to gas and diesel engines, manual/automatic transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, chassis, body, hydraulic systems, etc. for a wide variety of buses, vans and trucks.
  • Performs 3000 mile inspections, completes all minor/major repairs and preventive maintenance required.
  • Performs all minor body and paint touch up repairs.
  • Manages work priorities according to scheduled work actions and unexpected maintenance needs.
  • Maintains accurate written record of all repairs.
  • Maintains good working relationship with external Tech Support and DOT vehicle inspectors.
  • Responds to vehicle faults observed by Driver; makes repairs as needed on short notice.
  • Advises drivers of unusual vehicle operations and defects.
  • Maintains accurate record of parts used in maintenance actions.
  • Performs a wide variety of diagnostic tests as necessary to determine exact cause of vehicle malfunction.
  • Inspects and prepares vehicles for DOT inspection as needed.
  • Performs road services as needed.
  • Assists with special projects as assigned such as minor repairs to buildings and grounds and related efforts.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing and able to effectively coach other mechanical staff.
  • Must have Automotive air-conditioning credentials and demonstrate technical aptitude problem-solving skills.
  • Must possess knowledge of gas/diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical, hydraulics, chassis, body, etc. for a total fleet of approximately 60 diverse vehicles.
  • Must display tact and courtesy and be able to work well with staff, other programs and the public.
  • Must be able to follow complex oral and written directions and carry out required regulations and safety requirements.
  • Must have a means to be contacted for recall as necessary during off hours.
  • Must possess and maintain a basic set of mechanics tools.
  • Must maintain a commercial driver’s license, Class B with air brake and passenger endorsement.
  • Must possess knowledge of and stay current with changes to DOT regulations, NYSDOT Sections 720/721.
  • Must possess and maintain a NYS Inspector’s License.
  • Must be physically able to work long hours, lift 60 lbs. frequently and 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and set own work priorities.
  • Must wear protective clothing and related safety wear and PPE.
  • Must successfully meet Drug and Alcohol requirements/regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 1 - 2 years of vocational training in automotive repair; and
  • 3 - 5 years as a vehicle mechanic; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
