What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Distribution/Collection Worker III (Full-Time) position at Oconee County Georgia?
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance of water supply and
wastewater collection system facilities and appurtenances under general supervision. This position reports to the Water
Distribution/Collection Crew Leader.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
Must be able to independently perform assigned tasks while providing limited supervision and direction to assigned
staff on job sites.
Performs a variety of journey-level work to maintain treated water storage facilities, water distribution pipelines and
related appurtenances, sanitary sewers for the collection of wastewater and pumping equipment for both systems.
Supervises and performs manual work functions associated with water/sewer system repair and maintenance, which
may include installing water/sewer lines, repairing water/sewer lines, making water/sewer taps, inspecting potential
leaks, repairing storm drains, patching cuts in roadway, flushing manholes, maintaining wells, replacing water meters,
reading meters, locating water/sewer lines, digging holes/trenches, shoveling materials, and lifting/moving heavy
materials.
Ensures that storage reservoirs are maintained at the proper operating levels.
Adheres to and ensures adherence to established safety procedures; utilizes safety equipment and monitors work
environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Coordinates work activities with those of other departments, contractors, outside agencies, or others as needed.
Coordinates availability of equipment, materials, tools and supplies needed for projects.
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities, which may include a
utility truck, dump truck, tool truck, backhoe, trencher, tapping machine, jackhammer, air wrench, pipe horn, handheld
meter-reading computer, hammer, pick axe, shovel, rake, and mechanic tools.
Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which
may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning
equipment, and cleaning work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty
equipment.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, locate sheets, manuals, or other documentation; reviews,
completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages;
responds to requests for service or assistance.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, officials, contractors, engineers, vendors, the public,
and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve
problems.
Provides assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
Must be available to work extended hours as required and to respond to after-hour emergency calls within 30 minutes
when assigned stand-by duty.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) to two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving
water/sewer maintenance, meter reading, and equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education,
training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and
maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License and must obtain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License within six
months of hire.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work,
typically involving some combination of climbing (40 – 50 feet) and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and
crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and
materials (20-75 pounds). Must be able to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and accessories weighing
approximately 20 lbs. in emergency situations.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds,
odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental
conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes,
machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
