GENERAL DESCRIPTION :
Under general supervision, is responsible for directing and supervising the activities of assigned firefighters and / or engineers to ensure proper training and response to fire alarms, structure fires, rescue calls, and first-response medical calls in the protection of lives and property. Assists in maintenance duties regarding the station building(s), apparatus, equipment, and grounds. Maintains records and prepares reports as required. Reports to the Fire Captain and / or Fire Battalion Chief.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES :
- Responsible for the proper and adequate response of trained firefighters and equipment to handle any emergency or request for assistance from the public or any agencies in order to protect life and property. Supervises as well as takes an active role at emergency scenes and may serve as incident commander until relieved by the Fire Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, or Fire Chief.
- Responds to emergencies and selects and utilizes appropriate equipment in controlling the incident. Activities may include, but not limited to, handling and use of nozzles and hose lines, operating ventilation equipment, search and rescue, extrication, emergency first aid (including performing CPR and / or use of AED), climbing ladders, forcible entry, salvage and overhaul; performs rescues above ground level, rescues below ground level, rescues in swift water, rescues in lakes and ponds; and other means to control incident; performs duties under stressful conditions while possibly wearing personal protective ensembles (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- May serve as Battalion Chief / Shift Commander in the absence of shift Battalion Chief.
- Creates a positive work environment by motivating all members in a team-oriented atmosphere, and ensures professional conduct and actions of assigned firefighters.
- Assist in the development and responsible for the implementation of department rules and regulations, standard operating procedures (SOP).
- Participates in training and ensures required trainings as outlined by department policies are completed. Attends required conferences, seminars, meetings, etc., to remain knowledgeable of modern fire suppression, rescue, and other life safety methods.
- Develops and instructs a variety of programs and classes, which may include, but are not limited to, public education, community risk, probationary training, company inspections, smoke detector installation, and department pre-plans.
- May instruct other classes for the department, county employees, and outside agencies. Examples are emergency response, First-Aid, CPR, AED, bloodborne pathogens, etc.
- Observes personnel during trainings as well as emergency scenes to ensure personnel adhere to safety measures and policies. Sets example for personnel to follow regarding work safety.
- Ensures all required station activities are completed.
- Maintains personal fitness to ensure job performance.
- Resolves personnel issues of assigned crew as they arise.
- Inspects, repairs, and / or maintains fire equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, materials, turnout gear, medical response equipment, and vehicles for safe operation.
- Conducts research for evaluating and testing new equipment as well as giving input on specifications for apparatus and other equipment.
- Works with Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Battalion Chief, Fire Captain, co-workers, other county employees, fire and emergency response personnel from surrounding districts, business and / or property owners, medical personnel, sales representatives, and public on a daily basis.
- Prepares and / or processes various documents, incident reports, and various records, performance evaluations, memos, and correspondence.
- Operates a vehicle and a variety of specialized firefighting equipment, machinery, and office equipment, such as radio equipment, hazardous monitoring equipment, and personal protective equipment to include Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), fire apparatus, fire pumps, generators, saws, medical equipment, computers, printers, electronic devices, etc.
- Performs duties of firefighter as assigned and / or needed in fire suppression or other emergencies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
The educational requirement for this position is : High School Diploma or GED
Education may not be substituted for experience.
Related-experience required : Two (2) years with Oconee County Emergency Services or 5 years experience with a progressive department.
Experience may not be substituted for education.
