Oculus Pathology has an immediate full time position for a Pathology Technician/Gross Technician in San Antonio.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Pathology/Gross Technician functions as an assistant to the Pathologists and Pathologists’ Assistants of Oculus Pathology assigned both technical (tissue related) and non-technical duties which provides both efficient and cost effective non-physician support to the Practice. Provides additional support to other departments as needed
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt TYPE OF POSITION: Full-Time
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Preparation of tissue specimens at OCULUS affiliated hospitals in the San Antonio area as assigned, including Gross description, sectioning and submission of pathology specimens.
- Frozen section assistance as needed at OCULUS affiliated hospitals in the San Antonio and surrounding metropolitan area, as assigned.
- Technician assists in all technical aspects of frozen section preparation which may include accessioning and labeling, proper mounting and freezing, cutting, staining and cover slipping
- Maintaining and order supplies
- Conference coordinator at OCULUS affiliated hospitals in the San Antonio and surrounding metropolitan area, as assigned.
- Assist with collection and subsequent organization of all pertinent clinical information, associated glass slides and other materials necessary to the case presentation and possible prepare PowerPoint conference file.
- Autopsy Support which could possibly include Historian (notes), Physical assistance with manipulation of body, cleanup facility post procedure
- Courier
- Assist with administrative duties with quality and accreditation projects
- Administrative support to include retrieval of pathology and laboratory results from outside hospitals and labs, monitoring of pending lists.
- Miscellaneous duties in support of OCULUS as assigned.
WORK EXPERENCE REQUIREMENT
- No experience required
- Experience in an anatomic laboratory is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, staff and management.
- Ability to read and write.
- Strong ability to communicate verbally.
- Ability to work with biological and potentially biohazardous tissue and fluid specimens.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of an Associate’s degree in a laboratory science, or 60 college hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology
- Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or equivalent is preferred
- Must possess necessary qualifications to perform high complexity testing under the Clinical Laboratories Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) regulations (Sec. 493.1489)
