MAJOR FUNCTION
Reporting to the Equipment Manager, the Heavy Equipment lube technician is responsible for the maintenance and lubrication of heavy machinery, such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, haul trucks, graders, and other construction or industrial equipment. The primary role is to ensure that equipment operates efficiently and safely by performing routine preventive maintenance and inspections.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Report unsafe conditions, accidents, or incidents immediately.
Lubrication and Fluid Management:
- Change oils and lubricants in engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and other components according to manufacturer specifications.
- Grease and lubricate moving parts, such as bearings, gears, and joints, to reduce friction and wear.
- Top off or replace fluids, including hydraulic fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid, as needed.
Filter and Component Replacement:
- Replace oil, air, fuel, and hydraulic filters to maintain equipment performance and prevent contamination.
- Inspect and replace worn or damaged components, such as wiper blades, belts, or hoses, during routine maintenance.
Inspections and Diagnostics:
Conduct visual and operational inspections of heavy equipment to identify leaks, wear, or potential issues.
- Check fluid levels, tire pressure, and other critical systems to ensure proper operation.
Use diagnostic tools to troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical issues and report findings to supervisors or mechanics.
- Obtain fluid samples for laboratory analysis to monitor equipment health and detect contamination or wear.
Maintenance and Record-Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of services performed, parts used, and fluid samples in service logs or digital systems.
- Follow maintenance schedules to ensure timely servicing of equipment.
- Operate and maintain lubrication equipment, such as oil and grease guns, in good condition.
Safety and Cleanliness:
- Adhere to safety protocols and company standards to prevent accidents and ensure a safe work environment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper disposal of used oils, filters, and other materials.
- Report safety issues or equipment malfunctions to management immediately.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work independently or as part of a team, coordinating with mechanics, operators, and supervisors to prioritize maintenance tasks.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues to relay technical information or recommend additional repairs.
- Interact with customers or operators to explain the maintenance performed or suggest future service needs, if applicable.
Equipment Operation and Mobility:
- Operate heavy equipment or haul trucks to move them to service areas, requiring a valid driver’s license or specialized certification in some cases.
- Travel to active construction sites or remote locations to perform field maintenance, as needed.
Additional Tasks:
- Perform minor repairs, such as fixing small leaks or replacing basic components, under supervision.
- Assist mechanics with more complex repairs or maintenance tasks when required.
- Stay updated on lubrication best practices and manufacturer guidelines to improve service quality.
Fueling and lubing equipment onsite.
Key Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of heavy equipment systems (hydraulic, diesel, electrical) and lubrication best practices.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Proficiency with hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance tools like grease guns or fluid pumps.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50-70 lbs), work in tight spaces, and stand for long periods.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous inspection and maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and safety.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, & EXPERIENCE:
· Prefer high school diploma or general education degree (GED)
· Basic computer skills required.
· Two years of heavy equipment maintenance experience required
· Prior construction experience preferred.
· Must be able to write legibly to complete work orders and other required paperwork.
· Must be able to read and comprehend maintenance manuals.
· Must have hand and air tools required to repair heavy duty trucks and construction equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with vendors, management, and other coworkers, both individually and in front of a group
- Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Regular use of the telephone and email for communication is essential
- Sitting for extended periods of time is common
- Hearing, vision, and speaking within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information, and to prepare or inspect documents
- Good manual dexterity for the use of tools and machinery
- Good reasoning ability is important, must be able to understand and utilize management reports, memos, and other documents to conduct business
- Primarily an office position. Occasionally, site visits and field project visits are required. Travel to offices and projects in various locations around the country as needed. The following physical activities are often, but not always, associated with site visits:
- Must be able to stand or walk on a project site for extended durations
- When on project sites or if performing some types of work or activities, must wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to: earplugs, protective eyewear, gloves, hard hat, steel-toed work boots, and high visibility safety apparel.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This job is primarily performed outdoors at construction sites and occasionally indoors at our shop
