Old Dominion University's Department of Recreation & Wellness is seeking part-time fitness instructors to teach various fitness formats at the ODU Student Recreation and Well-Being Center, located at 4700 Powhatan Ave, Norfolk, VA 23529.
Job Description:
This position falls under the Fitness & Wellness unit area of the Department of Recreation & Wellness at Old Dominion University. The overall focus of this position is to instruct group exercise classes to the members of the Student Recreation & Well-Being Center (SRWC) and Waitzer Hall. Various class formats may be utilized with the design and intention to enhance the overall fitness levels of participants. Additionally, all employees of Recreation & Wellness must follow all policies and procedures set forth by the department.
Supervisors:
- Assistant Director of Fitness & Wellness
- Coordinator of Fitness & Wellness
Specific Responsibilities:
- Instruct group exercise class in a safe and effective manner. Formats of Interest: Pilates, Barre, HIIT, Strength, Yoga, Cycle, Dance Fitness.
- Record daily participant attendance through Rec Well App
- Ability to offer modifications to effectively engage a wide variety of performance levels
- Create a fun and engaging atmosphere through well planned exercise programs, music selection, themed workouts (when necessary) and group comradery
- Motivate diverse range of clientele
- Enforce policies and procedures of the SRWC & Waitzer Hall
- Implement emergency procedures when needed
Additional Responsibilities:
- First Aid, CPR and AED training (must be completed with the first 30 days of employment). The Department of Recreation and Wellness offers American Red Cross Certification classes each semester.
- Successfully pass semester audits of First Aid, CPR and AED skills
- Attend required area and department meetings and trainings
- Ability to adapt structured class to meet the demands of varied individuals
- Effectively communicate the perceived benefits of group exercise
- Deliver excellent customer service through effective communication skills, ability to multitask, and providing accurate information on services offered
- Address problems and complaints in a timely manner to enhance our image and program operation
Qualifications:
- Maintain certification in primary personal training or group fitness certification by a national recognized agency (ACSM, NASM, ACE, NCSA, etc.)
- Obtain and maintain a national recognized current certification in First Aid, CPR and AED training (American Red Cross, American Heart Association). The Department of Recreation and Wellness offers American Red Cross Certification classes each semester.
- Complete practical audition
Required Time Commitment:
- Attend all training sessions and scheduled meetings
- Maximum of 20 Hours per week
- Minimum of 1 classes per week
- Attend all monthly staff meetings and occasional specialized events
Pay Rate:
TBD based on certification(s), practical audition assessment, and interview. Pay Range: $16.40 - $19.40 an hour.
