This position is located within the District of Columbia Office on Aging (DCOA), Office of the Executive Director. DCOA has the responsibility for providing direction and comprehensive programs and services to the seniors, which include those persons with disabilities and the special populations of the District of Columbia. DCOA leads the District of Columbia's Age-Friendly City Initiative of transforming the District of Columbia into an age-friendly city within five (5) years by educating, encouraging, promoting, and recognizing improvements that promote a city that is inclusive of seniors which includes those persons with disabilities and special populations. The Age-Friendly City Initiative is a movement that benefits and facilitates the transformation of perspectives so that all will recognize DC's aging population as primary stakeholders. The Age-Friendly City Initiative is, also, part of an international effort begun by the World Health Organization (WHO) and supported by AARP's Age-Friendly Communities Network, to respond to two significant demographics tends: urbanization and population aging.
This position functions as an Age-Friendly City Program Officer, responsible for overseeing the program, assuring that the city provides a system to educate, encourage, promote, and recognize improvements that make the District of Columbia more user friendly for elderly residents. The work involves identifying and supporting communities in the District of Columbia that want to improve the physical and social environments of the city's elderly and help them remain healthy and active, which promote longevity, independence, and dignity.
Duties and Responsibilities
Identifies and recruits major stakeholders, aging service providers, innovative leaders, researchers, elderly advocates, business leaders and representatives from special populations to assemble the Mayor's Age-Friendly City Steering Committee.
Leads special studies of the World Health Organization's (WHO) identified eight (8) domains to assess and improve the domains that help influence the health and quality of life for the seniors which include those persons with disabilities and special populations, living in the District of Columbia. The eight (8) domains are: outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community support and health services.
case management to fulfill DCOA's requirements to support mandated federal and state reporting, review utilization data, reduce program waste and abuse, and improve program efficiencies and effectiveness.
Conduct strategic planning meetings to discuss program activities that impact the overall success operation of AFI. Conducts in-depth research and statistical analysis of the Age-Friendly City Initiative (AFI) issues. Present critical observations, findings and recommendations on AFI policies, procedures and regulation, and their effect on the residents and the District.
Develops a major comprehensive needs assessment study to examine the District's current efforts related to the eight domains by engaging and receiving input from the aforementioned populations through a series of public forums, information sessions, town hall meetings, etc.
Raise the profile of the District's Age-Friendly City Initiative in order to garner support and buy-in from all interested stakeholders and constituents.
Provides strategic leadership for the implementation of the Age-Friendly City Initiative and sustains its future as a part of the city's culture. Conducts research on best practices, policy issues, and resources to guide the development and implementation of the Age-Friendly City Initiative.
Establishes priorities and follow-through on the phases of the Age-Friendly City Initiative (AFI), ensuring sufficient preparation, implementation and completion of all projects related to the AFI program requirements.
Attend meetings with or on behalf of the Executive Director or Chief of Staff where issues of significant importance are discussed, and decisions are made concerning AFI.
Qualifications and Education
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression.
