SUMMARY:
Congresswoman Veronica Escobar seeks an enthusiastic, highly organized, creative, and self-motivated professional to serve as a District Representative in her El Paso Office.
The District Representative engages with the community in his or her outreach portfolio by creating community events to support the Congresswoman’s priorities and to promote District office services and projects, actively participating in community meetings and events to promote District office services and projects, and monitoring and reporting to Congresswoman Veronica Escobar and District Director on district issues. This position acts as a liaison to community organizations, district, and local agencies for the Congresswoman.
This position handles the local engagement portfolio for healthcare, environment, education and youth, LGBTQ, women’s issues, senior citizens, animal rights, law enforcement, public safety, gun violence prevention, arts, and humanities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS REQUIRED:
- Create community events or engagement activities to support the Congresswoman’s priorities and to promote District services and projects.
- Actively participates in community events to promote District office services and projects and to educate constituents about the Congresswoman’s work in DC and in El Paso;
- Act as the representative for the Congresswoman within his or her area of responsibility including meeting with constituents and community organizations, attending community meetings, verbal communications with constituents, and serving as a liaison with community organizations and federal, district, and local agencies to form effective relationships for the Congresswoman;
- Assess community feedback from outreach for problems requiring legislative action and makes recommendations to the District Director and DC based Legislative Team;
- Prepare periodic reports for the District Director on district activities in his or her assigned issue areas;
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date database of community contacts in assigned issue areas and relevant files and information related to those issue areas;
- Maintain a good working relationship with Congresswoman Escobar, staff, and constituents;
- Accept performance-based criticism and directions;
- Work well under pressure and able to manage stress effectively;
- Work in a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, weekends and holidays; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION (OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE):
- At least one year of community outreach is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of related experience or training.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
· Bilingual English/Spanish preferred;
· Excellent organizational, writing, presentation and communication skills;
· Ability to connect community priorities to the Congresswoman’s legislative and oversight work;
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
· Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Traveling frequently to community events and organizations is expected. A significant amount of the District Representative’s time will be spent out in the community. Mileage is reimbursed.
· Some work is mainly performed in an office environment. Noise levels are usually moderate.
· Ability to work in a small workstation without an expectation of privacy.
· This position reports directly to the District Director.
