The Health Service Assistant under the direction of the Charge Nurse monitors the patient’s physical and emotional well-being and reports unusual behavior or physical ailments to the appropriate professional staff. Provides nursing, psychiatric, and personal care to mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or intellectually disabled patients. The Health Service Assistant observes and influences patient’s behavior and communication while interacting with them, teaching and counseling them as well as garnering their trust. The Health Service Assistant takes and records measures of a patient’s physical condition using devices such as thermometers and blood pressure gauges and pulse oximetry machines. The Health Service Assistant encourages patients to develop work skills and to participate in social, recreational, and other therapeutic activities that enhance interpersonal skills and develop social and therapeutic relationships. The Health Service Assistant assists the professional staff in working with patients as required. The Health Service Assistant restrains violent, potentially violent, or suicidal patients by verbal or physical means as per policy. The Health Service Assistant assists patients in performing tasks such as bathing and keeping beds, clothing, and living areas clean. The Health Service Assistant acts as a role model for subordinate employees. Performs related duties as required. Mandatory overtime is an essential function of this position. Applicants selected for employment must successfully complete a chemical urinalysis and breath analysis drug screening test. All employees shall be subject to drug testing for probable cause as set forth by agency and bureau policies. Applicants selected must successfully complete a background check. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital holds accreditation from The Joint Commission and certification by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). The hospital offers a wide range of services to patients either committed to the hospital through civil commitment or, in the case of forensic patients, ordered through the judicial system.
