Position Overview:
The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is seeking a dynamic and strategic Chief Legal & Civil Rights Officer (CLCRO) to join our Executive Cabinet. Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, this executive leadership position plays a key role in overseeing legal and civil rights matters for the agency, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, and championing equity and inclusion throughout OSPI. We are looking for an individual who excels in providing proactive leadership, fostering a culture of equity, and guiding the agency’s legal direction with creativity and insight.
- As the senior executive in legal and civil rights affairs, the CLCRO will be responsible for leading a talented team in the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA), managing all non-personnel legal matters, and collaborating with the Attorney General’s Office. This is a unique opportunity to impact the future of K-12 education in Washington State, promoting a culture that is equitable, inclusive, and nondiscriminatory.
Required Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate Degree.
- Five years of legal experience in a legal office or setting.
- Minimum of three years of leadership experience.
- Proven successful leadership in the areas of equity and civil rights to assist the agency with its anti-racist objectives, preferably in the public sector.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, both internal and external.
- Strong analytic, conflict management, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong internal and external customer service skills.
- Commitment to equity and diversity.
- Ability to provide leadership and strategic direction on high-profile, significant impact issues.
- Exceptional collaboration skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of education law and Washington’s K–12 education system.
- Experience in representing an organization governed by Washington state law.
- Experience working in legal affairs within a government organization.
- Five years of experience supervising multiple individuals or teams.
