Writer – Austin, Texas

The Office of the Governor is looking for a Writer (Editor II) to work in the Constituent Communication Division (CCOM).

The salary is $5,788.12 - $6,210.75 a month ($69,457.44 - $ 74,529.00 a year).

What You’ll Do

The Writer reports to the Director of Constituent Communication. Performs advanced (senior-level) editorial, informational, and communications work. Work involves researching, writing, editing, and the production of correspondence and programs or materials for release to the agency, the public, and other agencies.

  • Writes, edits, and reviews correspondence that accurately reflects the administration’s position on issues.
  • Drafts ceremonial greetings, certificates, proclamations, and messages.
  • Edits and proofreads the work of others in a collaborative and positive manner and ensures consistency in grammar, style, content, and format.
  • Coordinates the writing, editing, layout, reproduction, and dissemination of printed and online materials.
  • Verifies facts, dates and statistics using standard references and sources.
  • Responds to general information inquiries about agency activities.
  • Documents sources of data in automated database and master catalogue of approved language.
  • Conducts data searches as required for fact checking and background research purposes.
  • Conducts internal research on previously issued correspondence and ceremonial items.
  • Consults appropriate agency staff for background and issue development while composing appropriate responses for correspondence.
  • Designs printed and online materials by arranging text and images for readability and visual appeal.
  • Adheres to the state agency records retention program, practices, policies and procedures.
  • Performs hands-on assistance with mailings and communications if required to meet a departmental goal or deadline.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal effectiveness and tact while communicating with various internal and external constituencies and stakeholders.
  • Maintains knowledge of current events regarding change and innovation in state governmental affairs and public policy.
  • Contributes to a healthy culture within the division and agency.
  • Trains agency staff on effective business writing and agency expectations.
  • May coordinate information programs, conferences, seminars, workshops, and public hearings.
  • May develop website content and participate in usability testing.
  • May contribute to the development and dissemination of an internal Style Manual.
  • Establishes and maintains a regular attendance record and a reliable body of work performance.

How You’ll Qualify

  • High school graduate or equivalent; and
  • Two (2) years of related work experience as a writer, editor, or similar position, demonstrating advanced skills and experience in communications, computing, information research, and technology.

Note: Experience and education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.

You’re a Great Fit with

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in English, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field of study;
  • Three (3) years of related work experience as a writer, editor, or similar position;
  • Proficient use of automated information tracking systems and advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite products, including Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Experience with Indigov;
  • Must be able to work within tight deadlines in a demanding environment;
  • Must be knowledgeable of the administration’s key initiatives and policy positions; and
  • Must possess and maintain the highest ethical and confidentiality standards.
