Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Quality & Technical Services, Food Safety Manager will be part of, and have matrixed leadership from the operations team at ofi - Olde Thompson in Bayonne, New Jersey. This position will be responsible and accountable for Food Safety and Quality Assurance programs and implementation based on regulatory standards and customer specifications. They will provide day to day support to the corporate technical team and site Quality and Operations teams for measurement and management of product quality and ensuring food safety across the product portfolio manufactured at the Bayonne plant and other warehouse locations. They will assist in developing quality systems such Safe Quality Foods (SQF), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), and provide technical expertise in Physical, Chemical and Microbiological analysis and interpretation of results. they will lead a team of supervisors and technicians to support operational food safety/quality and provide data and troubleshooting support to the operations team.
The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of experience as a Food Safety and Quality (FSQ) manager and an advanced understanding of food laws and regulations. This role will be expected to be the onsite subject matter expert, have advanced risk assessment skills and be comfortable performing and leading root cause analysis and complaint trend analysis.

Position Responsibilities
- Lead Quality Team in all aspects of daily operations and performance KPI’s. This Includes, Floor Quality Technician, Quality Lab and Sanitation functions.
- Ensure full compliance of all products from the Bayonne plant and warehouse as per the Food Safety Plan, Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) food safety regulations and maintain the highest level of food safety.
- Ensure that facilities follow all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Food Safety Plan (HACCP), and Global Food Safety Initiatives (GFSI) guidelines including developing a Food Safety Culture.
- Develop training programs for Food Safety & Quality (FSQ) team and frontline workforce with emphasis on continuous improvement and measure effectiveness of training programs.
- Lead and Participate in GMP, Food Safety, and Quality Management System audits and monitor corrective actions to deficient findings for completion and effectiveness, providing gap closure assistance to the manufacturing facilities.
- Responsible and accountable for Product Hold & Disposition based on Quality Inspection results based on risk assessment, business value, and data analysis.
- Implement appropriate Corrective Action and Preventative Action (CAPA) as needed.
- Lead Bayonne’s Food Safety (HACCP) team for product designs, manufacturing processes, Food Safety plans, environmental monitoring and pest control programs, finished product microbiological testing programs, allergen program, and sanitation programs.
- Validate and assure compliance with established food safety and quality objectives through daily monitoring programs, team supervision, and on-going verification of internal and external laboratory or industry benchmarking.
- Establish new and improved quality/food safety programs, policies and procedures to ensure that established standards of quality are consistently achieved, measured, documented and maintained. Provide food safety risk assessment information, new technology information, and risk management strategies to operations and leadership. This includes the maintenance of existing programs and their documentation.
- Lead Root Cause Analysis and develop corrective actions for customer complaints, plant Quality and food safety issues and implement the corrective actions working with all the relevant functional teams.
- Monitor Supplier Quality and ensure ingredients and packaging material suppliers adhere to the Specification and supply chain compliance programs as per FSMA regulations.
- Responsible for maintaining certifications for products manufactured by the Bayonne plant per the requirement of the customers and central Quality Assurance (QA) team. This currently includes Organic, Kosher, Halal.
- Provide data, resources, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives as applicable.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Food Science /Microbiology or related discipline is required.
- 5-10 years of leadership experience in multiple types of food processing.
- Extensive technical knowledge and experience in food chemistry, microbiology, food safety. Preferably in a dry/powder packing facility.
- Ability to understand plant operations which include dry powder filling, value-added retail product manufacturing and packaging.
- BPCS (Better Process Controls School) and PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual) certifications is preferred.
- Ability to lead and develop a team of supervisors in both technical capability and effective communication is required.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively work with all managerial levels, customers, regulatory, and industry organizations is required.
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills with and ability to understand the key requirements in the Food Safety and Quality Systems, development of continuous improvement programs.
- Strong communication skills and ability to build and conduct training programs to the QA and operations team.
- Must have the ability to focus on operational excellence using team building skills and clarity of purpose.
- Knowledge and execution experience in GFSI & SQF auditing schemes and requirements.
- Formal audit training or equivalent certification or experience is required.
- Working knowledge of ERP platforms, Plex and/or SAP preferred, for data generation, analysis, and decision making is required.
- Bilingual, English and Spanish preferred.
