FLSA Status : Non-Exempt, Full-Time, Eligible for benefits.
GENERAL PURPOSE
This position performs a variety of duties in the reporting, categorizing, and proper completion of all types of police reports. Receives general supervision from higher level supervisory and management staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Investigate and properly classify reported crimes / incidents which may be received over the telephone or in person at the police station. Includes interviewing witnesses, victims and those suspected of committing crimes, and taking the appropriate action which may include recommending physical arrest, citing suspected violators, or referring delinquent juveniles to the court.
- Accurately answer complicated and specific questions posed by the public regarding interpretations of the criminal code, city ordinances, and / or departmental procedures.
- When assigned as the Evidence Custodian : receive, observe, and appropriately handle evidence brought in by police officers to be temporarily stored until permanently received by the evidence custodian.
- Operate a computer terminal, personal computer, printer, and photocopier in both the dispatch software function as well as the computerized police reporting system.
- Appropriately deal with unusual and emergency situations, such as injured, frightened, distraught, or disoriented people, as they may suddenly appear at the front desk.
- Conduct complete or partial investigations of traffic accidents.
- Complete VIN inspections.
- Interface with representatives of other law enforcement agencies and other public entities as they contact the department for service.
- Research records and criminal histories for self-initiated investigations or to assist other officers, including a working knowledge of, and access to, the State Bureau of Criminal Identification computer files.
- May be required to testify in court regarding cases investigated, information obtained, and action taken.
- May be required to assess and render basic, life sustaining, first aid until other emergency medical practitioners can be summoned.
- May find it necessary to negotiate and attempt to calm distraught persons who call in threatening suicide or harm to others, or who walk into the front desk.
- Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours; and employees are required to use on-site equipment.
- Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city.
- Perform other related duties as required / assigned.
