What are the responsibilities and job description for the Client Navigator position at Oglala Lakota Division of Behavioral Health?
Overview
Client navigation is an innovative support model that is demonstrated to improve outcomes for clients in recovery. The Client Navigator is a lay service provider that helps: 1. Increase client compliance with treatment recommendations; 2. Increase communication to bridge gaps between clients and addiction and medical providers; 3. Delivers alcohol and substance abuse education to targeted populations of both youth and adults who have demonstrated at-risk behavior; 4. Provide follow-up with clients who have received inpatient and outpatient services per OL-DBH’s evaluation protocol; and 5. Communicate agency goals and objectives to the general public. The Client Navigator works per scheduled shift and will be required to work days and evenings.
Responsibilities & Duties
Administrative
1. File client data per Division policies and procedures. The Oglala Lakota Division of Behavioral Health (OL-DBH) has precise procedures for filing client electronic and hardcopy records which must be adhered to consistently.
2. Document client services using OL-DBH’s data management system in a manner that is timely and accurate.
3. Complete required documentation for client admission, discharge, referral, and continued care.
Technical
1. Become familiar with the current body of behavioral health/public health literature related to alcohol, commercial tobacco, and substance abuse.
2. Manage an assigned client caseload where the Client Navigator serves as a guide through the treatment and recovery process while using a recovery plan and progress notes to chart each client’s success.
3. Facilitate recovery support and alcohol and drug education groups for individuals of all ages.
4. Provide follow-up with clients currently participating in outpatient or aftercare treatment services.
5. Utilize the OL-DBH evaluation protocol to refer clients back to the program who continue to struggle with addiction after discharge.
Additional Client & Public Services
1. Transportation of clients for appointments, Division-sanctioned activities, and agency referrals.
2. Participate in weekly client staffing.
3. Prepare and deliver information related to the health, economic, and social consequences of alcohol, commercial tobacco, and other drug abuse.
4. Perform all other duties as assigned by the direct supervisor or Executive Director.
Requirements & Knowledge
1. Must maintain abstinence from alcohol and other drugs throughout employment.
2. Must have a basic understanding of how Lakota culture, values, and worldview can be used to promote alcohol and drug abstinence and healthy lifestyle choices.
3. Must participate in all required clinical staff development training and work with the direct supervisor and/or Executive Director to negotiate an individualized professional development plan.
4. Must have functional knowledge of Microsoft Office suite software including Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.
5. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills. The amount of writing required of Addiction Counselor Trainees is considered moderate to high.
6. Must adhere to confidentiality regulations under 42 CFR Part 2 and the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA).
7. Must be assertive and use good judgment when involved in situations that may be emotionally intense.
8. Must be able to respond to any client emergency during work/duty hours.
9. Must abide by all OL-DBH policies and procedures.
10. Must take and pass a drug and 2-step TB skin test.
Qualifications
1. High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree preferred.
2. Must possess four (4) years of previous work experience required.
3. Must have a valid driver’s license and self-insured.
4. Must have no prior felony convictions in the last five (5) years.
5. Must have no misdemeanor convictions in the past one (1) year. (Excluding minor traffic violations).

Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
