What are the responsibilities and job description for the Power Systems Electrical Engineer position at Oglethorpe Power Corporation?
The Power Systems Electrical Engineer provides fleet engineering, Subject Matter Expertise, and technical support for the power systems and electrical equipment used at Oglethorpe Power Corporation's (OPC) power generating facilities. This includes low, medium, and high voltage switchgear; motor controls center apparatus; segmented, non-segmented, and isophase bus work; digital protective relays; large electric generators; and generator step up and auxiliary transformers.
- Competency, knowledge, and experience are required in "industry standard" electrical testing with the preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance with the associated power systems and electrical equipment.
- The incumbent shall be responsible for the OPC's fleet wide NERC PRC and MOD electrical testing program and its related reporting to enable compliance with NERC/SERC standards.
- The incumbent will provide subject matter expertise with the design, selection, modification, and replacement of digital protective relays for plant power systems and electrical equipment.
- As a member of the Technical Services team, the incumbent will also provide engineering support for the review of drawings, specifications, and design memoranda for generation projects in development or under construction.
Job Duties:
- Subject Matter Expertise with technical support and engineering for power plant electrical systems and electrical equipment
- Planning the scope for plant electrical systems and electrical equipment with planned maintenance outages.
- Oversee and/or perform the electrical testing and inspections with predictive and preventive maintenance programs for OPC's power plants.
- Serve as the OPC technical advisor with defining and standardizing the predictive and preventive maintenance programs (CMMS/Maximo) for power plant electrical systems and equipment across the OPC fleet.
- Provide Subject Matter Expertise with technical review for design of new power plant systems or modifications to existing power plant systems with the review and comment of drawings, specifications, design memoranda, and service contracts/agreements.
- Provide engineering support to ensure OPCs compliance with NERC Reliability Standards. This includes NERC PRC and MOD electrical testing program and its related reporting to enable compliance with NERC/SERC standards.
Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology (preferably BSEE) - Technical and business knowledge of generating plant operation, performance and economics.
Experience:
- 10 years minimum engineering and five years minimum preventive and predictive maintenance experience in an operating commercial electric power generating plant required, including planning, budgeting, preventive and predictive maintenance and maintenance analysis.

Unusual hours required of this position: The generating plants operate on a 24-hour basis. At their discretion, the incumbent may elect to remain on site around the clock during forced outages, maintenance outages, or to attend plant meetings which occur outside normal office hours. The incumbent is on-call 24 hours in the event of incidents that affect the operation, rating, or reliability of the Corporation's generating assets.
Salary : $124,000 - $155,000
